Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is one of the most important cultural traditions in Ethiopia. It is more than just drinking coffee — it is a symbol of hospitality, respect, and community.

The Process

1. Washing & Roasting the Beans

Green coffee beans are washed and roasted over a charcoal stove. Guests enjoy the fresh aroma as the host moves the roasting pan around the room.

2. Grinding

The roasted beans are ground by hand using a traditional wooden mortar and pestle.

3. Brewing in a Jebena

The coffee is brewed in a traditional clay pot called a jebena and served in small cups.

4. Three Rounds of Coffee

Abol – First and strongest round

Tona – Second round

Baraka – Third round (means “blessing”)

Each round has cultural meaning, and leaving before the third round is sometimes considered impolite.

Atmosphere

Fresh grass and flowers are spread on the floor

Incense is burned

Popcorn or traditional snacks are served

Cultural Importance
