Meet your guide in front of the catacombs museum, holding a panel saying "catacombs tour". Then, just relax and stroll into the dark galleries of the City of Light... if you dare!
The underground quarry
The first part of the tour is dedicated to this fascinating former underground quarry of limestone, in which the catacombs were established later. You will hear about the tough work made by quarrymen to built the monuments of Paris and find out the amazing amount of galleries running under the French capital.
The ossuary
The rest of the tour is taking place in the ossuary, in the middle of the remains of millions of Parisians. You will find out why the cemeteries of Paris were emptied of their content under the streets of the City of Light, and how they were transferred 60 feet deep. Your guide will point out at diseases, injuries, surgery marks still visible on the bones which shows the harshness of our ancestors' lives.
Exit the empire of death
Exit the museum with your guide to visit the souvenir shop or spend more time on your own inside the museum to take extra photos.

Tips
There are 131 steps to climb down and 111 to climb up in a spiral staircase, which can be uncomfortable for claustrophobic. The ground is uneven and there are water pools sometimes. The temperature is 57F (14C) with a 98% of humidity which cause the place to be chilly after a while. A light jacket and walking shoes are advised.
The site is not suitable for wheelchairs nor strollers.It is forbidden to enter the Catacombs with a suitcase or a large bag. Only bags of 40 x 30 cm format are authorized. You can take photos but flash and tripods are not allowed.
