Cologne's compact Old Town tells how a Roman city became a centre of medieval Christianity. Beneath Great St. Martin, an archaeological site reveals the Roman warehouses of the town where Maternus is recorded as first bishop in 313 AD. Above ground, Romanesque churches show how that faith flourished. A short walk away, St. Maria im Kapitol holds carved 11th-century wooden doors, among the oldest of their kind north of the Alps, depicting the life of Christ.
