The train (InterCity Express) & local public transportation is by far the most superior method of transport in Germany. For cross country travel, the high speed IC & ICE trains (Deutsche Bahn) are ideal. With that said, trains in Germany can be late/delayed from time to time, so take that into account.
Within cities, cycling is a peaceful and convenient form of travel.
April to May & September to October are ideal travel times because of the moderate weather and of course, Oktoberfest (September to October). However each season in Germany offers its own version of fun.

No. It is not advised that you pay for anything using US dollars. When paying for a service or item, you need to convert your USD into Euros. It’s best to do so at an ATM, or for convenience, at the airport when you land ( keep in mind, Germany has a 10,000€ restriction upon entry). Keep cash on hand, as credit cards are not as commonly used.
