09:30 AM

Meeting Point

City centre sector 17, cha

- We’ll meet in Sector 17 City Centre, right in front of Neelam Theatre. It’s an easy, well-known landmark, so everyone can find it. From there, we can take a few moments to look around and talk about how Sector 17 was planned as part of Le Corbusier’s grid of sectors. It’s the city’s commercial heart, designed to be walkable with shops, offices, and public spaces. Neelam Theatre itself is a familiar gathering point, and from here, we’ll trace the city’s story, its urban planning, architectural vision, and the blend of modernist ideas that make Chandigarh so unique.

10:20 AM

Le Corbusier centre, sector 19

Visit the Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19, the former office of Le Corbusier. Explore original drawings, plans, photographs, sketches, furniture, and archival material that reveal his vision for Chandigarh. Learn about the city’s planning, architecture, and modernist ideas, and discover how Le Corbusier and his team transformed Chandigarh into a unique planned city.

11:10 AM

Pierre Jeanneret House, sector 5

Visit Pierre Jeanneret House (House Number 57) in Sector 5, built in 1954 and one of the earliest houses in Chandigarh’s planned layout. Jeanneret lived and worked here for several years. Today, the ground floor is used as a gallery showcasing his life, architecture, and furniture designs, while the first floor operates as a homestay, offering visitors a glimpse into the architect’s living environment.

12:00 PM

Capitol complex, sector 1

Explore Chandigarh’s iconic Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of Le Corbusier’s architectural vision. Discover its three landmark buildings—the High Court, Legislative Assembly, and Secretariat—along with four major monuments, including the Open Hand, Martyrs’ Memorial, Tower of Shadows, and Geometric Hill. This is a completely walking tour lasting around 1.5 hours. Visitors must carry their original passport for entry and security verification.

01:40 PM

Rock Garden, sector 1

The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a sprawling, dreamlike world created by Nek Chand entirely from recycled materials like broken ceramics, bangles, tiles, and industrial waste. What began as his quiet secret project grew over decades into a labyrinth of pathways, courtyards, waterfalls, and sculptures that feel at once playful and spiritual. Walking through, you’ll encounter whimsical figures, dancers, animals, and village scenes, each piece handmade with remarkable detail. The garden covers about 40 acres and reflects Chandigarh’s spirit of innovation, blending art, reuse, and everyday imagination.

03:00 PM

Government Museum and Art Gallery

Visit the Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10, one of Chandigarh’s most important cultural landmarks, designed by Le Corbusier as part of the city’s Cultural Complex. Explore its remarkable collection of Gandharan sculptures, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings, stone and metal sculptures, decorative arts, coins, and Indian contemporary art. Learn how many of these collections trace their journey back to the former Central Museum of Lahore after the Partition of 1947. During the visit, discover how Le Corbusier’s architecture combines exposed concrete, natural light, ventilation, water, and functional design. The museum’s spacious courtyard and sculpture areas further connect art with Chandigarh’s modernist architectural vision.

04:00 PM

Panjab University

Explore the historic Panjab University campus in Sector 14, whose original campus plan was designed by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret under the general guidance of Le Corbusier. Discover the architectural character of Gandhi Bhavan, an iconic three-winged structure surrounded by water and dedicated to the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. Visit the A. C. Joshi Library, a striking red-sandstone and concrete building designed by Jeanneret, known for its spacious reading halls and thoughtful use of natural light. See the distinctive Student Centre, popularly known as StuC, with its circular form and spiralling ramp, a vibrant hub of student life and social interaction. Together, these buildings showcase Chandigarh’s modernist architecture, innovative planning, and the close relationship between architecture, landscape, and everyday life.
