Bru Na Boinne (Newgrange)
Newgrange is a 5,000-year-old passage tomb in Ireland’s Boyne Valley, older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge. Built by Neolithic people, it’s famous for its winter solstice alignment, when sunlight illuminates the inner chamber. Decorated with ancient carvings, Newgrange is a masterpiece of prehistoric engineering and a key part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here you also have the opportunity to visit Knowth Monument with its incredible stone art.
Lunch Break
You can lunch after visiting the monuments here at Bru Na Boinne. There is a nice cafe at the centre with a wide selection to choose from.
Monaterboice Monastery
Monasterboice is an early Christian monastic site in County Louth, known for its impressive round tower and some of the finest high crosses in Ireland. Founded in the 5th century, it was once a centre of religious learning. The most famous feature is the 5.5-metre-high Muiredach’s Cross, richly carved with biblical scenes. Set in a peaceful rural location, Monasterboice offers a glimpse into Ireland’s early Christian heritage and artistic achievement.
Mellifont Abbey
Mellifont Abbey, located near Drogheda in County Louth, was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by St Malachy. Once a large and influential religious centre, it followed the strict architectural style of the Cistercian order, bringing continental monastic design to Ireland. Today, visitors can explore its atmospheric ruins, including the unique 13th-century octagonal lavabo, where monks once washed before meals. Mellifont offers a fascinating window into medieval monastic life.
