The Tanneries
Known for its leather goods, Marrakech is home to a few tanneries where local families have been employed for generations. In fact, the tanneries have existed since the medina was founded over a thousand years ago. For visitors, the experience is often a sensory overload — smell, colors, and sight — as they watch the men at work using pre-Industrial age techniques. In our latest blog post, we share our tips for visiting the historic tanneries of Marrakech.
Ben Youssef Madrassa
A madrassah is a public or private establishment, intended for the teaching and accommodation of non-resident students in the place where the building is located[1]. In the land of Islam, the first center of learning is the mosque. Important courses are taught in university mosques such as the Quarawiyyne in Fez or the Youssoufia in Marrakech, neighboring the Ben Youssef madrassa. The madrassah is rather an annex serving as accommodation for students and for certain courses.
Over the centuries, religious education was also provided in the Ribâts, both a military fortress and a convent, ensuring the initiation of populations into the principles of the new religion during the expansion of Islam[2]. During the time of the Almoravids, with Youssef Ibn Tachfin and especially Ali Ben Youssef who surrounded themselves with scholars and provided their court with a rich library, teaching was also done at the sultan's court. The large mosques founded by the sultans, which became places of high-level education, doubled as places of accommodation, leading to the founding of madrassahs from the 13th century.
Souks
The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly Djemaa El-Fna Square itself. As day turns to dusk, the square transforms into a captivating spectacle. Snake charmers, street performers, musicians, and storytellers gather to entertain the crowds. The aroma of delicious Moroccan cuisine wafts through the air, enticing you to sample local delicacies from the food stalls.
In summary, the Marrakech Souks and Djemaa El-Fna Square half-day walking tour is an immersive journey through the vibrant markets and cultural hub of Marrakech. It offers an opportunity to engage with local traditions, witness the unique atmosphere of the souks, and experience the enchantment of Djemaa El-Fna Square.
