Sinharaja rainforest: This reserve - one of the least disturbed and biologically unique primary Low land rainforests in Sri Lanka, covering an extent of over 11,000 hectares. Of international significance and declared a man and biosphere reserve (MAB) in 1978 when UNESCO included it in, it’s international network of biosphere reserves. it was subsequently designated a national wilderness area in 1988 and received full status as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1989. Situated in the low land wet zone of the country with an average temperature of 23.6°C and an annual rainfall of more than 2500 mm, the high-level of endemism makes in an international rarity. More than 60% of trees are endemic and its home to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles, and rare amphibians, of Sri Lanka’s endemic birds, all rainforest species are seen here, including the exclusive, red-faced Malkoha, Green Billed Caucal and Sri Lankan blue magpie.

Day 03 - Bundala National Park
Day 03 - Early morning at 6.30 proceed to jetty with packed breakfast to sail off to the deep blue seas for an adventure that you will never forget; whale and dolphin watching.

Bundala National Park- This is the first Ramsar site in Sri Lanka and it is the most important wet land for birds in Sri Lanka outside the northern province. The lagoons of the parks are among the most important wintering areas for migratory shore birds in the country, regularly accommodating over 15,000 shore birds at any one time. It is the last refuge of the greater flamingo in this part of the island, as well as being important for elephants, a variety of threatened reptiles. Dense Thorny scrub provides a natural barrier to the winds that would otherwise accelerate desertification in this arid countryside.

The forest still harbors a few elephants and migratory herds of up to 80 animals have been recorded in the area. Day 04 - Yala National Park, Elephant Transit Home, Udawalawe National Park

Yala National Park: The Yala National Park is located in the South easter region of Sri Lanka and extends over 2 provinces and 2 administrative districts. The park consists of 5 blocks and entire area is 97,881 hectares. The block 1 is 14,101 hectares itself and used for tourism. A total of 32 species of mammals has been recorded, threatened species are sloth bear, leopard, elephant and water buffalo. Wild boar, spotted deer, Sambar & Golden Jackal are also present. In land and migratory birds comprise 120-130 species. Raptors include crested serpent eagle and white bellied sea eagle. Many water birds are attracted to the lagoons, including the lesser flamingo, pelican, painted stork, black necked stork, of which there are perhaps only a dozen in the country, grey heron, purple heron, night heron, purple coot and darter.

Elephant Transit Home:- Time Duration: 1 hour
The elephant transit home which is supported by “Born Free Foundation” (UK), was established by the government in 1995 with the purpose of rescuing and rehabilitating baby elephants that have become separated from their herd. The babies are well looked after, fed and groomed to integrate back into a jungle environment, after stay of approximately 4 years.
Standing behind a barrier, you can watch the 25-30 babies ambling along behind keeper into the compound, where they are then fed with milk. You might even see some of them stamping and trumpeting with in patience as they wait for their food. - Time duration maybe 1 hour

Udawalawe National Park is situated in the dry zone in Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. The total area of the park is 30,821 hectares. Udawalawe had been declared as the fifth National Park of the Country on the 30th of June 1972. It is renowned for its outstanding scenic beauty and wealth of faunal species, particularly mammals and birds. It has become a tourist attraction throughout the year as it is blessed with unique flora and fauna while the possibility to view the elephants at close range has become another main attraction. The predominant ecosystem of the park area is the forest area with scattered grasslands and thorny scrubs.
There are herds of elephants, wild population Sambar, spotted dear, barking deer, wild boar and water buffalo are gradually reestablishing themselves. Other mammals include toque macaque, common langur, jackal, sloth bear, toddy cat, leopard & black napped hare.
The bird species include large number of warblers together with the usual low country birds in forested areas, and a variety raptors. Water birds found on the reservoir include rare visitors/breeding residence such as India Cormorant and Osprey. - Time duration maybe 2 hours

Horton Plain National Park an area covering 31 square kilometers (3160 hectares) and located in the highest plateau of Sri Lanka is biodiversity hotspot unlike any other. The path is of high biological value has it boasts a unique ecosystem which hosts countless endemic species and breathtaking landscape including ‘Bakers Fall’ and the legendary ‘Worlds end’, an 884-meter escarpment located on the southeast corner of the plateau. The montane evergreen forests consist of endemic and rare species of tress, shrubs, herbs, lianas and epiphytes. Most of the animal which live in these forests are unique to the montane forest habitat while some can only be found in Horton plains. The grasslands of the Horton plains are known as montane upper wet ‘Patana’ and this unique ecosystem exists nowhere else.

Animals- The Sambar is the most common and easily observable animal species in the park. A good eye can observe the dusky striped squirrel, giant squirrel, bear monkey – highland species, purple face leaf monkey & the brown mongoose. Leopard is hardly seen but it is fecal matter can be found specially in the Totapola Nature Trail.
The Horton Plain supports rich faunal diversity including three freshwater crabs, 17 dragonflies, 48 butterflies, 14 amphibians, 6 reptiles, 103 birds & 33 mammal species have been recorded in the park.

The scenery is breathtaking as you drive on mountainous roads amidst tea gardens and cascading waterfalls. Visit a working tea factory enroute. Here you can watch the complete process of turning the raw green leaf into the familiar black/brown final product, there after a walk through the tea plantation.

Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a forest reserved set on the hillside behind the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. It was formerly known as ‘Uda Wasala Watta’, which translate in Sinhala to the garden above the royal palace in the days of the Kandyan Kings (14th – 19th century), the forest was reserved for the use of the royal family. The reserve is now open to the public, who can escape the bustle of the city by exploring and enjoying the natural surroundings of Udawatta Kele. The park hosts 15 different mammals, more than 80 species of birds, 32 species of butterflies and several varieties of reptiles and amphibians.

Negombo; Sometimes known as ‘Little Rome’ due to the profusion of Christian churches, this archetypal fishing village has now grown to a major beach resort on the west coast, north of Colombo and 20 mins from the International Airport. The wide sandy beaches and safe sea bathing are major attractions, as is the fish market where busy trading of a variety of fish, prawns and crabs takes place each morning (except Sunday) when the fishing craft return to shore. Traditional large sailed out trigger canoes are a Pictorious sight in this village which was once a trading part for the Portuguese and Dutch. Other attractions are the old Dutch Fort gate built in 1672 now a part of the prison. Dutch canal which was then a supply route for the Dutch administration.

Since this tour has been scheduled to spend much more time out in the field, you’d better in suitable clothes and shoes. To watch the wild animals and birds most suitable time is 6.00 Am to 9.00 Am of the day and you will have to leave the hotel early in the morning at 5.30 most of the days so you will always have to take your picnic breakfast with you. And also to protect from tropical heat and insect bites, some sunscreen and insect repellant are recommended.
