The Marangu Route is the only route with mountain huts, making it comfortable and popular. This 6-day itinerary allows better acclimatization, increasing summit success. You will pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and reach the Roof of Africa – Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Meeting Point

Day 1: Moshi / Arusha – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

After we pick you up, we will drive to Marangu Gate for registration. Begin the trek through lush rainforest, home to monkeys and birds.

Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.

Altitude: 2,720m 3,720m

Walking time: 6–7 hours

Distance: 12 km

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest and enter moorland zone with wide views of Kilimanjaro. Enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, relax, dinner, and overnight

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Altitude: 3,720m

Walking time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This day helps your body adjust to altitude.

Optional hike toward Zebra Rocks (4,020m), then return to Horombo Hut.

Rest, hydrate well, and prepare for higher altitude.

Walking time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

Trek across the alpine desert with amazing landscapes. The air is thinner, so walk slowly.

Arrive at Kibo Hut, early dinner, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt.

Altitude: 3,720m -4,703m

Walking time: 6–8 hours

Distance: 10 km

Overnight: Kibo Hut

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Start the summit climb at midnight. Trek to Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!

Celebrate, take photos, then descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Altitude: 4,703m - 5,895m - 3,720m

Walking time: 10–14 hours

Overnight: Horombo Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi / Arusha

Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate.

Receive your summit certificate, then transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.

Altitude: 3,720m - 1,870m

Walking time: 5–6 hours
