Meeting Point
Your Hotel in Stone Town
- I will meet you directly at your hotel lobby in Stone Town. Please wait in the reception area 5 minutes before the start time. If your hotel is outside Stone Town, I can arrange transportation for an additional cost or meet you at a central meeting point in Stone Town.
Anglican Cathedral & Former Slave Market
We begin the tour at one of Stone Town's most important historical sites. Here you will explore the underground slave chambers, the emotional slave monument, and the Anglican Cathedral built exactly on the former slave market.
I will explain the history of the East African Slave Trade, the missionaries who fought against it, and how Zanzibar became a center for abolition. This is the most powerful and educational stop of the tour.
Darajani Market (Local Central Market)
We walk into Darajani, Stone Town's busiest and most vibrant local market. Here you'll experience the daily life of Zanzibaris as we explore the spice section, fresh fruits and vegetables, and the lively fish and meat market.
This stop gives you an authentic look at Zanzibar's culture, food traditions, and the rich spice trade that shaped the Island's identity.
The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)
We continue to the Old Fort, the oldest standing building in Stone Town. Built by the Omanis in the 17th century, it once served as a defensive fortress against the Portuguese.
Inside, we'll explore the old battlements, the amphitheater area, and small artisan shops.
This stop offers a fascinating look into Stone Town's strategic importance and its long history of cultural encounters.
House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib)
We stop at the famous House of Wonders, one of Stone Town's most iconic landmarks. Although currently closed for restoration, it remains an important symbol of Zanzibar's history.
I will explain why it was once considered the most modern building in East Africa - featuring electricity, running water and the first elevator in the region.
You'll learn about Sultan Barghash, Omani architecture, and the role this palace played in Zanzibar's royal era.
Freddy Mercury House
We will continue our tour to the birthplace of the legendary singer Freddy Mercury. Discover his early life in Zanzibar, his family's history and how the Island influenced his music and personality.
A must-see for music lovers and anyone curious about Zanzibar's unique cultural heritage.
Forodhani Gardens
We finish the tour at Forodhani Gardens, Stone Town's lively waterfront park. Here you can enjoy beautiful ocean views, see the traditional wooden dhows, and experience the relaxing atmosphere where locals gather in the evenings.
I will share tips on the best street foods, restaurants, and places to explore after the tour. It's the perfect spot to end your Stone Town experience with great photos and insights.
