“Exactly What We Were Hoping For On Our Trip!”
TL;DR: would HIGHLY recommend and use again if we went back! Tony is super communicative in planning and very knowledgable for tours and history. We were able to fully customize our time with him, and he accommodated our preferences on the fly during the days. In Hoi An, we went to a nearby farming village and then toured around Old Town. He struck a great balance of being informative + engaging without overwhelming. I wanted to shop some and walk around leisurely in between spots, which Tony was fine with! He knew all the good local spots for food, including better versions of the more "touristy" destinations. Trust him with this. We only had a half day in Danang and packed in as much as we could in that time. Tony was also able to point out and talk about sights in the car as we passed them. Our tours included pick up and drop off at our hotel. Tony is punctual, has his own car, which was clean and auto-started (key for hot VN days!), and provided us cold waters from his prepared cooler. In case it needs to be said, his English is excellent and we always felt safe and comfortable with his driving and company. His pricing was very fair and when our meal cost less than what was allotted for the food tour, he offered to refund us the difference, which we appreciated but had him keep as gratuity. All in all, if/when we go back, we would reach out to Tony again for all our tour and transport needs. It's super convenient that he's both the driver and the professional guide. And he's a good photographer! He was definitely one of the highlights of our short time in Vietnam and we can't thank him enough.

While this depends on your preferences, touring Vietnam’s major cities has been made less difficult with the spread of English in tourist areas (Vietnam ranks number 58 out of 113 non-native English countries). But guides are so much more than language translators. They provide safety, historical, cultural and social context, and they save a lot of time that could be spent zipping from one venue to the next, or getting lost.
This is a tough one! But each city offers something different, so here’s a quick comparison.
