Tangol Tours, Defensa 831, San Telmo
10:30 am: we will meet in Tangol San Telmo Office to go to the Feria de Antiguedades de San Pedro Telmo. Since 1970, every Sunday this event takes place in Plaza Dorrego and Defensa Street, which is peatonal for this event. More than 10000 people, most of them tourists, visit every Sunday 270 sell stands. There you can find furniture to local articles, cloth, antique, and hide handicraft. Also we will enjoy tango shows with dancers, live statues and other street shows, which with the local artesanies and cultural importance, makes this fair an ideal scenery to visit. However, we can not mention the San Telmo Market, a perfect place to buy souvenirs because there they offer unique and original products.
After we visit and enjoy all the essence that the San Telmo Fair has, we will go to the Buenos Aires South-West part to arrive at the known Feria de Mataderos, created 30 years ago, and work with exit since there being a real Gaucha Culture Celebration. It has 3 areas apart from the food court: traditional crafts, Art Festivals, and Gaucho skills; around it, various activities such as workshops, talks, and exhibitions are offered.
More than 300 stands attended by artisans sell traditional folkloric products such as mates, ponchos of llamas or alpacas, leather and silver elements.
Then, you will have free time to visit the “Museo Criollo de Los Corrales”. It is a rural-style museum that shows us how gauchos live: their cloth, tools, and daily use objects. Also, it will explain how Argentina became a major exporter and world leader in the meat industry; you can find arms, knives, carriages, animals, and field paints. (This is an optional activity and in this tour, the museum fee is not included).
When you get into the fair, you will notice that it has a lot of grills where they prepare the famous “asado” and typical dishes too. It will be the moment to eat delicious “empanadas” with 1 beverage, both included in this tour.
After this, we will visit the craft stands: accessories, daily use objects and musical instruments. Products and local dishes (cheese, jellies, liquor) have a cheaper price than other places in Buenos Aires, so it is a good option to get them.
The gastronomy and crafts of Feria de Mataderos mix perfectly with the music and folkloric dances that are made there because this fair is known because of the art festivals and gauchos presentation. Sometimes, you can watch horse races and participate in tango classes.
