Where can we find ATMs for foreign cards in Japan?

People visiting Japan often have a common complaint. They say that it's difficult to withdraw money from ATMs.

Actually it's estimated that only about 25% of ATMs in Japan accept foreign cards.

One of my clients faced this problem, and we finally found the ATM which accept foreing cards.

We found the ATM at a convenience store called Seven-Eleven and a post office.

Seven-Eleven is the most popular convenience store in Japan. They have 17,052 stores across Japan as of Oct in 2014. It's literally convenient, but in some rural areas it might be difficult to find Seven-Elevens and small shops sometimes don't accept credit cards.

Now banks are working on installing more ATMs which accept foreign cards, but I'm afraid it takes years.

We should withdraw cash at major cities in advance.
