Meet your guide in front of the catacombs museum. She will hold a panel and wear a name tag with her name: Leo. Then, just relax and follow her into the mysterious underground galleries of the City of Light... if you dare!
The first part of the tour is dedicated to this fascinating former underground quarry of limestone, in which the catacombs were established later. You will hear about the tough work made by quarrymen to built the monuments of Paris and find out the amazing amount of galleries running under the French capital.
You will have the chance to enter the restricted area, only opened to tour guides, situated in a lower level where you can admire the superb sculptures carved in the limestone during several years in 1777 by a quarryman known as Decure, probably the oldest cataphile known.
You might also meet him, as he's believed to haunt the museum according to the visitors who managed to catch him on their camera (of course, your guide will share the photo!)...
The rest of the tour is taking place in the ossuary, in the middle of the remains of millions of Parisians. You will find out why the cemeteries of Paris were emptied of their content under the streets of the City of Light, and how they were transferred 60 feet deep. Your guide will point out at diseases, injuries, surgery marks still visible on the bones which shows the harshness of our ancestors' lives.
Exit the museum with your guide to visit the souvenir shop or stay a bit longer inside to take more photos.
