Istiqlal, which means “Independence” in Arabic. Located in the city center, almost opposite the National Cathedral, the Mosque is also meant to be a symbol of peace and religious tolerance.

Proclamation Monument
Constructed in 1920 from a design by J.F.L. Blankenberg, this two-story Art Deco building covers 1,138 m² on a 3,914 m² plot. In 1931, it was purchased by the Nillmij insurance company. At the outbreak of the Pacific War, it served as the British General Consulate. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, it became the residence of Rear Admiral Tadashi Maeda. After the Allies arrived in September 1945, the British used it as their military headquarters. From 1961 to 1981, the English Embassy rented the building, before it was handed over to the Indonesian Department of Education and Culture on December 28, 1981. The following year, it was used by the National Library of Indonesia as an office.
