What colors will we see today?
That’s the question that is often asked by almost all foreign guests we guide so far when approaching the Crater of Lakes Kelimutu. The answer is no one knows for sure! Everything depends on the mood of the spirits inhabiting each of the three lakes. Mount Kelimutu with three crater lakes, each filled with "different colored boiling water", can be called Dark Green, Turquoise and Dark Brown if it does not change color to Red, White and Blue.

What colors will we see today?
That is a question that is often asked by almost all foreign guests we guide so far when approaching the crater of Lake Kelimutu. The answer is no one knows for sure! Everything depends on the mood of the spirits inhabiting each of the three lakes.
Mount Kelimutu with three crater lakes, each with "different colored boiling water", can be called Dark Green, Turquoise and Dark Brown if it does not change color to Red, White and Blue. This color change makes the Kelimutu crater lake one of the wonders of the world that is greatly admired by visitors from all over the world.
Kelimutu Lake is located in the Kelimutu National Park area on Flores Island, precisely in Moni Village in the regency of Ende, 62 kilometers from Ende City.
Experts provide various explanations about the change in the color of Kelimutu Crater Lakes; maybe because of the smoke emitting from below and moving the highly nutritious water upwards or vice versa, others say that this is just a chemical reaction. However, the community around the Kelimutu Crater Lake has its own and unique version. They believed that it is all due to the spirits of the dead constantly changing the color of the three crater lakes--whenever the spirit's mood changed, the water of the three lakes also changed color. Due to frequent changes, it means that the spirit is somewhat restless after death.
Some mystical details show that the lake which is located apart from the other two lakes in the west is usually white in color and is called Tiwu Ata Bupu which means Old People Lake, which is considered as a gathering place for the spirits of people who live their lives properly and correctly. The other two lakes are divided by a thin crater wall, namely Tiwu Nuwa Muri Ko'o Fai or Boys and Girls Lake, usually light green or turquoise which symbolizes a life filled with happiness. And the last one is Dark Green and often turns into Bloody Red as a gathering place for the spirits of people who behaved badly or maliciously during their lifetime.
A walk around the lakeside is possible, but only limited to the guardrail, as the volcanic rock and gravel loosens easily when stepped on and can cause you to fall. Besides that, the harsh steam emanating from the lake can make you dizzy.
The most comfortable and safe season for climbing Mount Kelimutu is the dry season between May and September, and the peak falls in July and August.
If you arrive at the summit 15 minutes before 06:00 you will see a stunning sunrise.
Apart from enjoying the beauty of the three Crater Lakes of Kelimutu and the surrounding natural scenery, you can also see people from the surrounding villages selling Lio-Ende's signature hand-woven fabrics, as well as coffee, tea, and various kinds of snacks for breakfast made from local ingredients.
In calm moments you can also see monkeys that come looking for food from crumbs of biscuits, bread or peanuts. And if you are completely silent and silent, you will hear the melodious chirping of various types of birds, as well as the sound of the universe.
