Olbia is the gateway to Sardinia and the economic engine of Gallura (a north east Sardinian province) . The name Olbia means "the happy town" and was given by the ancient Greek navigators who used it as a base for their trade for about two centuries. Also very rich and ancient is its traditional cuisine that you can taste in one of the best "agriturismo" in the area. The agriturismo is a kind of farm restaurant, which with a moderate price can offer a full array of traditional Sardinian dishes.

After the Greeks came the Carthaginians and finally, in 238 BC, the Romans, who dominated Sardinia until the arrival of the Vandals, in 456 AD. , and thanks to these historical periods, Olbia has many monuments and an archaeological museum that houses precious finds. In the medieval period the town shrank and so its economy but, in the last 50 years, we can consider it a booming town. I've been living in Olbia more than thirty years and in this period I've witnessed an extraordinary development, thanks mostly to its many beautiful beaches and spectacular landscape, very much appreciated by the tourists.
The itinerary is all around the Olbia area: we start with the city center, a rather small area, that includes the San Simplicio church ( built with granite blocks on the eleventh century) then we pass through the Corso Umberto ( the main shopping area of Olbia ) to reach the archeological museum. After the museum we go the Castle of Pedres ( built in the XI cent. ) and to the nearby tomb of giants of Su monte e s'abe, a prehistoric collective tomb of 4000 years ago. Also we will take the very panoramic road to Golfo Aranci to admire the Golf of Olbia.
At the end we will go for the typical Gallura dinner, in an agriturismo immersed in the uncontaminated nature of the hills of Berchiddeddu (about 15 km from Olbia). It is considered one of the best restaurant farms in northern Sardinia, the ideal place to discover the authentic flavors of the Sardinian cuisine and especially those of Gallura.

I am a licensed tourist guide of the Sardinia Region with many years of experience and I always love to present and to show my island. I think it is a very beautiful and interesting place and it really deserves to be visited. At the university, I've studied sociolinguistics but as I am a native Sardinian, all my studies were mostly connected to Sardinia, which has a very special cultural and linguistic situation. Anyhow, beside its interesting history, culture and languages, Sardinia has the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, plus and extraordinary variety of landscapes. I've worked as tour guide more than 30 years, before just as part time activity during the summer and now as a full time work, and even after so many years, I always enjoy to take the people around this beautiful and extraordinary island.
“Knowledgeable, warm hearted local!”
We can’t recommend Matteo enough. He’s a very knowledgeable local with a wonderful energy. He picked us up in the north of the island and he curated a custom agenda for us based on our interests and our requested final destination in the south of the island. He was also flexible- helping us add and modify the agenda as ideas come up! We had an incredible day and arrived safely in the south of the island for part two of our trip. What an incredible way to see and learn more of the island, rather than just driving straight from point A to point B!
