Barbagia is fascinating area of Sardinia; an initial discovery reveals a terrain rugged yet articulated (perhaps the wildest on the Island), and a world where customs and traditions pair with a generous people. It is a life characterized and preceded by millennia of fascinating history. In its east is the Supramonte Ogliastrino, a chalky plateau dominated by Monte Corrasi (4, 800 ft high) and extending throughout the territories of Oliena, Orgosolo, Dorgali, Bunei and Urzulei.

From the Olbia area, we'll reach the Barbagia in about one hour with the car. After the first stop for a coffee in a gas station near Dorgali, we will visit, if the people wish to do it, the chasm of Ispingoli. A cave dominated by an enormous 38-meter high limestone column, one of the tallest stalactite-stalagmite examples in Europe. In the past, it was known as the Virgins' Abyss, a name with haunting significance: archeological research has discovered that the site was probably used by the Phoenician as a sacrificial well.
If you suffer vertigo and don't feel to go down on chasm, we'll go to Monte Ortobene, the sacred mountain of Nuoro, to see in its top, the bronze statue of the Redentore, and after we will visit a cavern still used as a house by the shepherds. Finally, we will go to the Orgosolo Supramonte, where we will enjoy tasty, typical Sardinian open-air cooking, among the ancient holm-oaks, with the genuine flavors of Barbagia and its strong wines and grappa.
Orgosolo was known in the past as the capital of the bandits but, nowadays, it is just an open air museum full of tourists which come to see its murales.

I am a licensed tourist guide of the Sardinia Region with many years of experience and I always love to present and to show my island. I think it is a very beautiful and interesting place and it really deserves to be visited. At the university, I've studied sociolinguistics but as I am a native Sardinian, all my studies were mostly connected to Sardinia, which has a very special cultural and linguistic situation. Anyhow, beside its interesting history, culture and languages, Sardinia has the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, plus and extraordinary variety of landscapes. I've worked as tour guide more than 30 years, before just as part time activity during the summer and now as a full time work, and even after so many years, I always enjoy to take the people around this beautiful and extraordinary island.
“Knowledgeable, warm hearted local!”
We can’t recommend Matteo enough. He’s a very knowledgeable local with a wonderful energy. He picked us up in the north of the island and he curated a custom agenda for us based on our interests and our requested final destination in the south of the island. He was also flexible- helping us add and modify the agenda as ideas come up! We had an incredible day and arrived safely in the south of the island for part two of our trip. What an incredible way to see and learn more of the island, rather than just driving straight from point A to point B!
