Jeonju History, Hanok & Bibim-bap Tour -- One-Day Round-Trip from Seoul
Jeonju is one of Korea’s most picturesque towns, and so interesting as the well-preserved origin of the Grand Founder of Joseon Dynasty, with many important historic sites centered around a cluster of traditional Korean tile-roof buildings, the famous Hanok Village. This tour is a great chance for you to experience & photograph Jeonju's best sites , and also eat the very best meal of its celebrated traditional cuisine, guided by an American expert on Korean cultural history (retired professor).

Meeting Point
Seoul Train Station, or your Hotel Lobby
- Seoul Train Station, or your Hotel Lobby
Seoul Station
We take the KTX bullet-train 90 minutes south to Jeonju City
Jeonju Station
We'll arrive at Jeonju Train Station, and grab a taxi to our first stop.
Scenic Pavilion
Hanbyeok-dangru is a very charming traditional pavilion built in 1404 and overlooking the river from a rocky cliff, a place where scholarly gentlemen gathered to enjoy discussions and entertainment for more than five centuries.
Jeonju Hyanggyo Historic Academy
We will then walk to Jeonju Hyanggyo, the very important Neo-Confucian private academy where the best young scholars were trained. You will experience a grand Hanok school-complex featuring huge ginkgo trees surrounded by several original buildings -- an inspiring atmosphere!
Omok-dae hilltop lookout
We then stroll over and up to the Omok-dae hilltop lookout to get great views over the famous Hanok Village, and see a stone monument erected ther for Taejo Yi Seong-gye himself -- because he held a victory banquet here.
Jeondong Catholic Cathedral
We'll next visit the Jeondong Cathedral, the historic, beautiful Romanesque structure in the heart of Jeonju City, finished in 1914 and providing a stark contrast to the old Joseon architecture all-around. It is captivating in its complex soaring design and its statues of Korean Catholic martyrs of trhe 1800s; your guide will explain its importance in spiritual history.
Gyeonggi-jeon Shrine with Royal Portrait Museum
Right across the street we'll pass through the grand front-gate and walk through this large and celebrated complex erected in 1410. It features fascinating history exhibits surrounded by lovely grounds shaded by numerous ancient trees. While here you might feel as if you are immersed in one of the great historical Korean movies or TV-dramas…
Hanguk-jip Bibim-bap restaurant
By then we will be very hungry for lunch, and enjoy a well-deserved stop at Hankookjib [a.k.a. the Hanguk-jip, literally meaning "Korean House"], the oldest traditional restaurant in Jeonju. Bibim-bap is one of the most famous dishes of Korean cuisine, premium rice mixed with vegetables, a fried egg, small slices of marinated premium Korean beef, sesame seeds and oil, and savory spices – served with sumptuous side-dishes! This restaurant opened in 1952 during the Korean war, and has been operated by three generations of a family devoted to its own tasting home-made sauces and the very best ingredients – earning it the highest reputation, and official designation by both the Michelin Guide and the South Korean government.
Jeonju Hanok Village
Happily sated, we will then stroll all-through the Jeonju Hanok Village, visiting some of the many interesting quirky places there, such as art exhibits, cultural presentations, a hanja [traditional mulberry paper] studio, and charming themed cafes -- while getting ‘instagramable’ views of the traditional houses in their narrow alleyways!
Leaving Hanok Village
When our time runs out, we will taxi back to the train station.
Jeonju Station
we will ride the bullet-train back to Seoul, 90 minutes, arriving back whenever you wish, by our pre-arranged plan.
Ending Point

Tour Important Information
* This tour involves a lot of walking, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
* Please let me know in advance if you have any food allergies or other dietary restrictions.
* Please note that this tour can be customized to suit particular food needs or desires. It can be changed to be higher-protein / lower-carbs by changing to more meat and tofu dishes, and can be done as a vegetarian or even vegan meal if that is needed – but always still with the same traditional Korean atmospheric cultural experiences!
* Please note that this tour often requires some advance notice in order to buy the train tickets – especially on weekends they can be sold-out as much as three weeks in advance; the guide will do his best to get the tickets we need.
* Please note that this tour can easily be expanded into two days, staying the night in one of the charming Hanok guest houses in the village after enjoying some of the evening delights there, then seeing more great places on the second day – personally highly recommended by Professor Mason is the Moak-san National Park just outside of the city, featuring Geumsan-sa the Golden Mountain Monastery, one of the top-seven Buddhist Temples in the entire nation, and several other really interesting sites that foreign visitors rarely get to see, but will always remember. A day trip to the famous Tap-sa Pagoda Temple posting 108 dramatic stone towers at the amazing-shaped Horse-Ears Mountain Provincial Park could also be easily accomplished. Just inquire about the extra expenses necessary for either of these extended options.

“Two full days exploring modern and ancient Seoul with a terrific guide.”
David knows ancient and modern Korea and Seoul. We learned about the political history of Korea, its relations with the US and neighboring Asia countries and North Korea. He told us about the economy, birth rates, social customs, religion, palaces, emperors and kings, geography and lots of practical aspects of modern Korean life. We have toured in many countries and David’s was probably the best. Strong recommendation for those interested in an incredibly well rounded and intelligent scholar, historian and raconteur.

“The only way to visit the National Museum of Korea!”
We recently arranged for a private tour of the spectacular National Museum of Korea in Seoul. Having visited the museum a yea I knew that there was so much to see and take in. Our guide David arrived and we discussed our areas of interest to narrow down where we would go in the Museum. The next 3 or so hours were spent with the engaging and incredibly knowledgeable David, an accomplished Professor of Korean Cultural Tourism, who has lived in Korea for decades. We were completely engaged and fascinated by the history and stories he shared with us. There’s no better way to understand such an enormous Museum collection. We loved touring the museum with David. We spent days after referring to him and his narrative. Couldn’t recommend him more highly!

Full-day Intro to Seoul and Korean History
This is my standard and very popular Itinerary for this ~8 hour tour: it can be adjusted for individual preferences. Its intention is to be a fascinating orientation & overview of Seoul "old & new", with introduction to who the Koreans are, and the key points of their history and customs. We can move faster and see more, or take our time and see a bit fewer sites; it's all up to your personal style. I will be telling colorful stories all along the way. You will learn so much, and in context!!

Half-day Intro to Seoul and Korean History
This is my most popular standard tour, perfect for any visiting Korea for a serious first look. It walks us through the best sights of Seoul's historic central downtown area, very close to each-other, while I tell the relevant colorful stories at each brief stop. It is completely flexible on the timing and number / nature of the sites visited; all depends on where I pick you up and drop you off, and just what you want to see and do. On this system I also offer a full-day version of this tour.

Korean War Museum and Memorial in Central Seoul -- a good alternative to the DMZ
I don't recommend day-trips to the DMZ -- the JSA remains off-limits due to North Korean policy, and anyway most of what you see is just barbed-wire fences and various monuments; a trip there does not give insight into North Korea nor about the 1950-53 war. The long trip driving up there & back is not worth your precious time. There is a very good alternative, which is this gigantic compound in the middle of Seoul -- a large museum of the Korean war & outdoor display of weaponry from that era.

Not a typical tour—understand Korea, not just see it. See how Korea’s history, culture, and daily life connect through the structure of old Seoul. Rather than simply visiting landmarks, this tour follows a clear narrative—from everyday life in Bukchon and local markets to the royal order of Gyeongbokgung—showing how different layers of society were organized. Whether traveling solo or as a couple, this experience offers a deeper and more meaningful way to understand the spirit of old Seoul.

Central Seoul Walking Tour ; From Gwanghwamun Square to Ikseon-dong Hanok Alley.
Gwanghwamun Square connects the Joseon Dynasty and modern times. The view of Bukaksan Mountain and Gyeongbokgung Palace from Gwanghwamun Square is just like a landscape. Let's go on a journey back to the past at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. We can tour antique shops and galleries along the Insadong Cultural Street. Jogyesa Temple is worth visiting. Lastly, Ikseon-dong Hanok Alley has pretty cafes, restaurants, and stores while maintaing traditional Korea houses.
