Meeting Point
Lindenhof, Zurich
- We meet at the Lindenhof, one of Zurich’s most historic viewpoints. Here, before entering the underground areas, I will introduce the nature and purpose of our tour: how the city’s visible streets, churches, and squares are deeply connected to the layers hidden beneath them. Standing on this ancient hill — once a Roman fort and later a medieval royal residence — we set the stage for the archaeological journey that awaits us, both above and below Zurich’s old town.
Lindenhof Cellar
From the square, we access the Lindenhof cellar, an underground space that preserves the remains of the Roman castrum and the medieval royal palace.
This site provides the perfect foundation for understanding Zurich’s stratified past and the origins of the city.
Thermengasse – Roman Bath Ruins
We walk down into the heart of the old town to reach the Thermengasse Roman baths.
Hidden beneath the modern street level, these ruins offer a rare glimpse into daily life in ancient Turicum, revealing how the Romans bathed, heated water, and structured public spaces nearly 2,000 years ago.
Fraumünster – Exterior Area Only
At the Fraumünster, we explore the outside of what was once one of the most influential women’s abbeys in Europe.
From the churchyard, we interpret the site’s many historical layers, including those uncovered in the crypt area—without entering the interior.
Wasserkirche & Ehgraben
Wasserkirche: We descend into the crypt to visit the Martyr Stone, traditionally linked to Zurich’s patron saints Felix and Regula. The space also preserves structural remains from earlier church phases.
Ehgraben: A short walk brings us to this historic trench, where informative panels explain how medieval Zurich dealt with water supply, waste disposal, and urban hygiene.
Grossmünster – Final Stop
We conclude the tour at the iconic Grossmünster, a landmark rich in legend, religion, and history.
This final stop brings together the threads of Zurich’s development—from Roman foundations to medieval power—and closes our journey through the city’s visible and hidden past.
Ending Point
Grossmünster, Grossmünsterplatz 8001 Zürich, Switzerland

About Tour Guide Nicola B.
Hi, I’m Nicola!
I’m an art historian, storyteller, and passionate tour guide originally from the charming village of Panzano in Chianti, Tuscany. Since 2013, I’ve been turning my love for art, culture, and beautiful places into unforgettable experiences for travelers. A few years ago, life brought me and my family to Bern, Switzerland — and now I’m lucky enough to call both Tuscany and Switzerland home.
For me, being a guide isn’t just about pointing out landmarks. It’s about sharing joy, connecting with people, and creating meaningful, authentic moments together. Whether we're exploring the medieval streets of Bern, the vineyards of Chianti, or a hidden gem you won’t find in guidebooks, my goal is to help you feel the soul of a place.
I’ve even started my own travel agency to bring these personal, memorable experiences to life — always with a big smile, plenty of stories, and maybe a good glass of wine along the way!
I’d love to show you around and help create memories you’ll carry home with you. See you soon on the road!
Nicola
