10:00 AM

Meeting Point

In front of Great St Mary's

10:00 AM

Great St Mary's

I'll meet you in front of Great St Mary's. This is considered to be the centre of Cambridge. The church is closely connected with the foundation of Cambridge University. In front of us will be the Senate House where the students have their graduation ceremony and one of the colleges, Gonville and Caius. We'll discuss the foundation of the university, the relationship between the university and the colleges, student antics involving the Senate House that made the front pages of the newspapers and ...

10:30 AM

Senate House Passage/Trinity Hall/The River Cam

We'll see and find out about a rather unusual neoclassical gate along Senate House Passage. Then pass by Trinity Hall, where Stephen Hawking did his PhD and discover why he ended up doing this in Cambridge instead of Oxford. Next have a look at the River Cam and check out what "punting" is.

11:00 AM

Trinity College/St John's College/King's College

We'll pass by Trinity where Sir Isaac Newton studied and where there is an apple tree. Is it "the" apple tree? St John's was founded by a rather remarkable woman who founded another Cambridge college and as for King's....well, you won't be able to miss King's College Chapel and you'll hear about some of the feats of the Cambridge Nightclimbers

11:30 AM

The Corpus Clock/The Eagle Pub/The Old Cavendish Laboratory

The Corpus Clock-one of the most modern additions to King's Parade (The Must-See Street in Cambridge) described as "both hypnotically beautiful and deeply disturbing". The Eagle pub where Shakespeare "may" have visited but where Crick and Watson "did" go to announce "We have discovered the secret of life" in 1953. And the Old Cavendish perhaps the most important building in Cambridge.

12:00 PM

King's College Chapel

It isn't surprising that many people looking at King's College Chapel, believe they are looking at a cathedral. This is, arguably, the most outstanding building in Cambridge and certainly one of the most visited places in Cambridge. We will go inside and find out why it has such a great reputation. Is it because it has the largest fan-vaulted ceiling in the world or some of the finest renaissance stained glass or its Rubens' painting? Well, you can decide.

01:00 PM

King's College

After leaving King's College, we can head to the punting station so that you can enjoy a 45-minute punt ride along "The Backs". The time for the punting is flexible. You can choose when you would like to do this during the whole tour.

02:00 PM

In front of Great St Mary's

This will be the end of the tour. We can finish back at Great St Mary's or a place of your choice in the city centre.

Ending Point

Outside King's College

Tour Important Information

King's College Chapel is a private building and opening times can change suddenly. It will be necessary to buy tickets in advance online. The best option is probably if you consult with me and then buy your ticket online. You do not need to pay for my entrance but you will need to order a free ticket for a "Resident Card Holder" when you purchase your tickets and that means I will be able to enter at the same time as you.

Current prices: Adult £11 Student or Child (5-17 yrs) £8.50

The typical punt ride is approximately 45 minutes and it goes along an area of the River Cam known as The Backs. It’s called that because it runs along the backs of a number of the colleges. This is something you could do at a time that suits you. You might want to do it in the middle or at the end of the day. The person controlling the punt is known as a chauffeur and that person will act as your guide and so it is not necessary for me to accompany you on the punt. The cost of the punt ride is not included in the price of this tour. If you would like to book a place in advance, I can recommend a punting company to you. On the day I will take you to the place where the punt leaves from and pick you up afterwards to continue the walking tour. If you wanted to allow time for a punt ride, but would rather check the weather on the day to decide when would be the best time to go, that would also be possible. The cost of punting is approximately £60 for 2 adults or £100 for 2 adults and 2 children

The start and finish times of this tour are flexible.

Moderate walking is involved so this should be suitable for most people. It's a good idea to where comfortable shoes and bear in mind that the chance of rain can never be entirely ruled out in the UK!

The starting time indicated is more of a suggestion. I am very flexible regarding starting times. I think the best thing is to agree the most suitable time in advance.

About Tour Guide Murray J.

Hello. I’m Murray, a qualified tour guide in Cambridge. Is it a satisfying job? Absolutely! Walking around such an attractive city is always a pleasure (yes, even if it happens to be raining. Well, we are in England!). It’s a perfect job for would-be researchers. I love creating new tours and that means coming up with ideas for topics that people might find interesting, doing the research, organizing the information, and turning it (hopefully) into an intriguing tour. As well as introducing people to the must-see sights, I enjoy the off-the-beaten-path tours and going to places most tour guides don’t go to. I love quirky things and there are plenty of those in Cambridge – like some fascinating public art that most people miss, and perhaps one of the most unusual street musicians anywhere, if we are lucky enough to see him! As well as physical walking tours, I give a number of virtual tours. I think these can be a very nice introduction to Cambridge and I’ve given these to several groups who have then later visited Cambridge and had a walking tour. In my virtual tours I use Google Street View and Powerpoint, which allows me to explore things that I can’t on a walking tour, so, for me, virtual tours can really compliment physical walking tours. In short, I think you’ll be able to tell that I enjoy introducing Cambridge whatever areas you are interested in.

Reviews

A fantastic, delightful and detailed trip around the Colleges at Cambridge

Murray was well prepared with printed material. He was right on time. We spent 3 hours around the Colleges in the central of Cambridge. He knew a lot of facts which made the tour interesting and funny and helped me remember for the lots of information we got. He also had activities for the kids (4 and 7 years old). It was an amazing 3 hours. I would highly recommend to walk around Cambridge with Murray for every kind of group as he is flexible and I'm sure he will organize just the right tour for you! Sophy

Sophy Thank you so much for that lovely review. I really enjoyed the tour, too! I'm sure the next time you visit King's College Chapel the kids will remember the stone dragons and greyhounds. It was also very nice to be part of your family for a short time. Many thanks again Murray
