Glen Grant Distillery
Founded in 1840 in Rothes, Speyside, Glen Grant is renowned for its innovative, light, and fruity single malt. Notably, it was the first distillery to install electric light in 1861 and is famous for its unique tall stills fitted with purifiers.
The Glen Grant 10-Year-Old has been distinguished as "Best 10-Year-Old" seven times. In addition to its whisky, the distillery features a stunning Victorian Garden, a restored woodland and orchard that includes a heather-thatched "Dram Pavilion" and a historic "dram safe" cave where whisky was traditionally stored for guests.
Glen Moray Distillery
Located in Elgin on the banks of the River Lossie, Glen Moray is a historic Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery. Converted from the West Brewery in 1897, it is renowned for its unpretentious and innovative approach to diverse cask-finished malts. The distillery is also notable for its unique, flood-prone location and its strong focus on varied maturation.
It features an on-site coffee shop within its Visitor Centre that serves light lunches, homemade soups, and seasonal specials.
Glenfiddich Distillery
Glenfiddich is more than just the world's best-selling single malt. It is a remarkable success story rooted in family tradition. Founded by William Grant in 1886, the distillery has evolved from a humble family project into a global icon while remaining entirely independent. It was one of a few distilleries in Scotland to remain operational during the Prohibition.
Every drop of Glenfiddich is crafted using water from a single source, the Robbie Dhu Spring. Additionally, the distillery uniquely employs two trained red-haired cocker spaniels to sniff out "bad" casks that might leak or taint the spirit.
The Sidings
The Sidings is a delightful "quirky 1950s railway carriage café" serving from March to November. It is an excellent stop for anyone walking the Speyside Way or travelling on the heritage train. They offer a selection of light homemade lunches, fresh bakes, and award-winning whisky ice cream. Additionally, they provide highly-rated Afternoon Tea for those who book in advance on specific days.
An alternative place to have lunch is at Dufftown itself. It is a region steeped in whisky heritage, currently home to six operational distilleries and the host of a renowned annual whisky festival. The town offers several local shops to explore and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal.
Craigellachie Bridge
Completed in 1814 and designed by the renowned Thomas Telford, this pioneering cast-iron masterpiece is a significant civil engineering landmark, often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge for its historical impact.
The bridge is famously known for surviving the Great "Muckle Spate" flood of 1829 and features a 150-foot high-tensile span framed by unique, castle-like masonry abutments. As Scotland's oldest surviving monumental iron bridge, it remains a prominent local landmark. Its scenic and atmospheric setting makes it an exceptional location for photography and historical sightseeing.
Glenlivet Distillery
Glenlivet was the first legal distillery in its region following the 1823 Excise Act. Founded in 1824, its founder famously carried two pistols to protect the distillery from illicit smugglers. King George IV requested a "drop of the infamous Glenlivet" during his 1822 visit to Scotland, despite it being contraband at the time. Today, it is the second-best-selling single malt globally.
The distillery utilizes tall, lantern-shaped stills to ensure only the lightest vapors reach the top. This process creates the brands signature smooth, floral, and fruity profile with notes of green apple, honey, and vanilla.
Glenfarclas Distillery
Glenfarclas is a historic, family-owned Speyside distillery established in 1836, renowned for using direct-fired stills and maturing almost exclusively in Sherry casks. Famously independent, the Grant family has owned and run it since 1865. It operates the largest copper pot stills in the Speyside region.
It is one of the few distilleries that still uses direct gas fire to heat its stills rather than steam. They trialled steam heating for three weeks, but reverted because they believed it negatively affected the spirit's flavour.
The Macallan Distillery
Founded in 1824 by a barley farmer and schoolteacher, The Macallan was one of the first Scottish distilleries to be legally licensed. Today, it is a global icon of luxury single malt whisky, renowned for its unique production methods and record-breaking auction sales.
The estate is centered around the historic Easter Elchies House, a Highland manor dating back to 1700. It features a state-of-the-art distillery with a contemporary design, built into the slope of the land to minimize its visual impact on the landscape.
Due to their limited availability and high visitor traffic, we are only able to book their Tastings session which they require to be booked months in advance.
CardHu Distillery
Cardhu Distillery is widely recognized as the "Speyside Home of Johnnie Walker." The distillery is celebrated for its unique history, having been pioneered by two generations of women who established its reputation for producing smooth, sweet, and approachable whiskies.
As one of the "Four Corners of Scotland" distilleries, Cardhu represents the Speyside region for Johnnie Walker, alongside Caol Ila (Islay), Clynelish (Highlands), and Glenkinchie (Lowlands).
Strathisla Distillery
Established in 1786 in Keith, Speyside, Strathisla is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Famous for its iconic pagoda roofs and picturesque appearance, it serves as the heart of Chivas Regal blends. Interestingly, the distillery has uniquely existed in three distinct regions—Lowland, Highland, and Speyside—due to historical boundary redefinitions.
The site originally served as a brewery for a local monastery, where 13th-century Dominican monks used the local water source to brew "potent heather ale."
Aberlour Distillery
Established in 1879, Aberlour Distillery remains a cornerstone of Speyside whisky-making. Currently the seventh top-selling single malt globally, it is renowned for its signature "sherry bomb" style and deep community ties.
The distillery sources its water from Birkenbush Springs, fed by runoff from Ben Rinnes, and maintains a historical link to the 6th-century St. Drostan’s Well. A unique local tradition continues every February to mark the start of the salmon fishing season, where a bottle of Aberlour is poured into the River Spey to "bless the waters."
Speyside Cooperage
Established in 1947, the Speyside Cooperage is the only working cooperage in the UK with a dedicated visitor centre. It offers a rare look into the ancient craft of "coopering"- the process of creating and repairing the oak casks that provide 60% to 80% of a whisky's final flavour. Traditional cask construction relies entirely on natural oak staves and metal hoops; the casks are kept watertight through precision and pressure, without the use of glue or nails.
The skill required for this trade is immense, taking apprentices four years to master. Historically, coopers at Speyside were often offered lifelong positions due to the high level of expertise required.

About Tour Guide John C.
I have been leading professional tours since 2016, following my time at Culloden Battlefield where I specialized in demonstrations of traditional Highland weaponry and clothing. I am deeply passionate about my Scottish Highland heritage, particularly the history of the clans, tartans, and single malt whisky.
As a local, I look forward to sharing Scotland's magnificent scenery and culture with you. Hailing from Caithness in the Far North, I take pride in wearing my traditional Highland kilt, including my family tartan along with my sporran, cravat, Jacobite shirt under my Highland waist coat and jacket as well as my Highland blue bonnet. I am well-acquainted with our Highland routes, popular points of interest, and hidden gems. As part of Highland hospitality I would be pleased to offer you a dram or two from my personal whisky collection accompanied by legendary stories and interesting Highland history.
I am based in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, home to the iconic Loch Ness and our beloved Nessie. Our region offers a wealth of historical and cultural sites, including the mystical ancient Clava Cairns, the historic Culloden Battlefield and the medieval charm of the city itself with our newly renovated Inverness Castle to name a few.
I look forward to welcoming you soon.
