There are so many interesting stories, books about maestro‘s life and great compositions to be studied as a Beethoven freak. Or, you may leave all the research and reading jobs to your professional tour guide. The Heiligenstadt Testament reflects Beethoven‘s despair over his increasing deafness and his continued desire to overcome his physical and emotional aliments. Heiligenstadt was situated far outside of city wall by then but it is a picturesque place within 19th district today.

Tour starts at the Mölker Bastei - Pasqualati House - Beethoven lived in the Pasqualati House (named after its owner) in the center of Vienna on several occasions between 1804 and 1815. The composer worked here on his opera "Fidelio" and on piano pieces such as the well-known "Für Elise". After taking the tram to the 19th have a short walk in the former therapy area in the 19th century (ps after the thermal water therapy was shut down the whole area used to be the residence of the Rothschild) and towards the Beethoven monument. Walking distance: appr. 1,4km or 20 minutes
Beethoven Museum Probustgasse 6
The place where he wrote his famous Heiligenstadt Testament. Additionally the museum is a fascinating, modern exhibition course that leads through 14 rooms. The topics covered include the history of the house, Beethoven's move from Bonn to Vienna, his stay here - in what was then the popular spa town of Heiligenstadt - nature, composing, earning money, the performance practice of the time and his legacy. But most importantly: you guide has puzzled a well connected story line just for you. By the way amongst all the residences (Beethoven moved almost 70 times in his life) Probusgasse was his favourite. Why?
Eroicagasse & Beethoven Gang
1927 to remember his 100th anniversary of the death a monument was erected for Beethoven in middle of his favourite promenade. (Walking distance approx. 2 km or 21 minutes)
Beethoven‘s famous wine tavern
Just a few steps away is the famous and one of the oldest heuriger (wine tavern) which has been established since 1683. It is located in an atmospheric house which Beethoven lived in for a while in 1817. By the way do you know the correlation between Beethoven’s deafness and wine? Enjoy a glass of their award-winning excellent Viennese wine while your Beethoven experience comes to the end. You may have your well deserved lunch here as well or join me back to the town.
