Most standard Beijing travel itineraries overlook this UNESCO Central‑Axis heritage site, even though it sits right beside Tiananmen. Step inside the well‑preserved Imperial Ancestral Temple, the supreme ritual complex where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held grand ancestor‑worshipping ceremonies.

Unlike most major halls inside the Forbidden City, which remain closed to visitors, we are granted rare access into the interior of the main Xiang‑dian Hall. This offers an exceptional chance to experience the inside of a top‑tier official building dating back to the Ming dynasty. We will examine how ancestor‑worship architecture differs from other imperial constructions, focusing on distinctive colour schemes and extraordinary building materials. You will see its enormous golden nanmu columns, a scarce surviving example of this precious timber.

While the Forbidden City was first built 600 years ago, very few original Ming‑dynasty structures still stand today. The Imperial Ancestral Temple preserves genuine Ming‑era fabric, making it an extremely valuable cultural relic.

We will wander its vast walled compound shaded by ancient cypress trees, many of which date back hundreds of years. We will discuss the strict ritual rules that governed every part of the complex, from overall site layout to building hierarchy, and how ancestor worship tied together imperial lineage, royal authority and state stability.

We’ll walk a short distance from the Imperial Ancestral Temple to the Meridian Gate, the grand southern main entrance of the Forbidden City and the key spatial pivot of Beijing’s Central Axis.

Standing on the Meridian Gate Square facing away from the palace, we will restore the ancient emperor’s perspective—ruling the nation while sitting facing south. From this viewpoint, you can clearly see the Imperial Ancestral Temple sits on the left and the Altar of Land and Grain on the right, allowing you to directly visualize the classic urban planning principle of "Left Ancestral Temple, Right Altar of Land and Grain" recorded in ancient classics.

Beyond its layout significance, we will also unpack the unique concave architectural shape of the Meridian Gate, the highest form of ancient Chinese gate tower design. We’ll talk about the grand imperial ceremonies once held here on major national occasions, and how this landmark links the two ritual complexes we explore today into a complete systematic heritage route.

This well-preserved imperial altar complex was built alongside the Forbidden City and the Imperial Ancestral Temple. Unlike the ancestor-focused worship at the Imperial Ancestral Temple, this sacred space was dedicated to the Gods of Land and Grain, the foundation of ancient China’s agricultural civilisation and imperial territorial sovereignty. We will centre our visit on the iconic Five-Coloured Earth Altar, where soil from five regions across the empire was laid to symbolise the emperor’s rule over all lands under heaven.

We will explore striking differences between its sacrificial rituals and those held at the Imperial Ancestral Temple. A unique north-to-south sacrificial procession route was followed here, rooted in traditional yin-yang cosmology, a feature you will not find at most other royal ritual buildings on the Central Axis.

We will wander through the grounds dotted with thousand-year-old Liao-dynasty cypresses, rare living relics that record the site’s millennium-long cultural continuity. We will also cover its extraordinary modern history: it was the first royal ritual compound opened to ordinary citizens as a public park in Beijing, and it bears profound ties to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, after whom the park is renamed Zhongshan Park. We will also visit the former site of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture, the pioneer institution that laid the groundwork for modern studies of ancient Chinese architecture.
