Meeting Point
Nairobi Area/ Nanyuki/ JKIA International Airport
- - Your guide will meet you at the agreed pickup location in Nairobi (hotel, airport, or city center). For guests traveling directly to Tharaka, the meeting point is our family homestead. Exact directions, GPS location, and contact details will be shared after your booking is confirmed.
Day 1 – Journey from Nairobi & Welcome to Tharaka
- Depart Nairobi and travel through the scenic eastern slopes of Mount Kenya to Tharaka.
- Arrive at your host family's traditional homestead and enjoy a warm welcome with a home-cooked breakfast.
- Discover the history of the Tharaka people and experience everyday homestead life, including sustainable farming, livestock keeping, indigenous herbs, medicinal plants, and local family traditions.
- Participate in preparing a traditional goat feast using local herbs and spices.
- Take a guided walk through the village and interact with members of the local community.
- Visit the village market to experience everyday trade and community life.
- Return to the homestead to relax before enjoying a traditional nyama choma dinner, followed by storytelling, songs, and oral traditions around the fire.
Day 2 – Sacred Landscapes & Oral Traditions
- Enjoy a traditional breakfast at the homestead.
- Visit the sacred Kijege and Ntugi Hills, the Kathita River, and the Tana River, learning about their spiritual significance and the history of the Tharaka people.
- Explore the dryland landscape while identifying indigenous trees, medicinal herbs, edible plants, and native wildlife.
- Return to the homestead for a traditional lunch.
- Spend the afternoon with respected community elders listening to oral histories, customs, and traditions that have been preserved for generations.
- End the day with a traditional dinner and storytelling around the fire.
Day 3 – Living Culture & Traditional Skills
- Start the day with a traditional breakfast.
- Meet community elders and learn about the Tharaka migration, clan system, customs, and oral history.
- Experience traditional honey harvesting and honey brewing (seasonal).
- Learn sisal harvesting, rope making, basket weaving, and handcraft production alongside local artisans.
- Enjoy a home-cooked lunch prepared with locally sourced ingredients.
- Participate in preparing traditional Tharaka dishes and discover the importance of indigenous foods.
- Enjoy free time for photography, documentary filmmaking, journaling, or relaxing at the homestead.
- Share a traditional dinner accompanied by music, songs, and cultural exchange.
Day 4 – Meru National Park Game Drive Adventure
- Depart for Meru National Park via Ura Gate.
- Enjoy a full-day game drive through one of Kenya's most diverse national parks.
- Search for elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, black and white rhinos, Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes, Beisa oryx, lesser kudu, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 400 bird species.
- Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the wilderness.
- Continue exploring the park's rivers, forests, open savannahs, and wildlife habitats.
- Return to the homestead for dinner and relaxation.
Day 5 – Sustainable Farming & Rural Life
- Join your host family in their daily farming activities.
- Learn sustainable farming practices, crop cultivation, livestock management, composting, water conservation, and climate-smart agriculture.
- Visit neighboring farms and interact with local farmers to understand farming in Kenya's dryland environment.
- Discover traditional agricultural knowledge that has sustained the Tharaka community for generations.
- Spend another memorable evening sharing stories with your host family.
Day 6 – Oral History & Cultural Heritage
- Meet respected community elders to learn about the migration and heritage of the Tharaka people.
- Record oral traditions and explore opportunities for documentary photography and filmmaking.
- Visit local artisans specializing in basket weaving, sisal crafts, woodworking, and traditional architecture.
- Experience authentic village life far from Kenya's usual tourist routes.
- End the day with a traditional dinner and cultural discussions with your hosts.
Day 7 – Community Legacy & Farewell Celebration
- Enjoy an extended village immersion with local families, farmers, and artisans.

Day 8 – Farewell to Tharaka Homestay
- Enjoy a final traditional breakfast with your host family.
- Take photographs, exchange contacts, and say goodbye to the community that welcomed you into their home.
- Begin the scenic journey back to Nairobi, stopping along the way for refreshments and memorable viewpoints.
- Arrive in Nairobi, bringing your unforgettable Tharaka Cultural Immersion experience to a close.

* This is an authentic cultural homestay experience, and guests are encouraged to participate in daily family and community life.
* Please book at least 3 days in advance to allow time for community and homestay arrangements.

* Wear comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunscreen for the climate.
* Bring a reusable water bottle, and a light jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
* This tour includes walking on uneven terrain, village paths, and natural trails.
* Please inform your host in advance of any food allergies, dietary requirements, or medical conditions.
* Respect local customs, traditions, and sacred sites. Your guide will explain the appropriate etiquette.

I enjoy welcoming people from around the world and sharing the traditions, history, and daily life of the Meru people, one of East Kenya's oldest Bantu communities.
Our homesteads offer a genuine cultural exchange where you'll live with a local family, enjoy home-cooked meals, participate in farming and community activities, and learn through storytelling and shared experiences. We also organise visits to the beautiful Meru National Park, a rarely touristed route near cultural and natural sites.
