Meeting Point

Calle Licenciado Primo de Verdad and Jose Maria Pino Suarez, Centro. Oaxaca

- Our meeting point is beneath a large strangler fig tree on a quiet street that serves as a parking area and is closed to regular traffic. Please arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled departure. Look for a white car or van with green letters and numbers on the license plates; the same vehicle number is also displayed on the rear side of the vehicle. Please keep your phone handy, as we may contact you with last-minute updates if street closures, events, or races require a change to the meeting point.

Cumbre Ixtepeji Trailhead

After arriving at the trailhead, we'll take a few minutes to prepare our gear, adjust backpacks, and go over the route and safety recommendations. Once everyone is ready, we'll begin our ascent through the forests of the Sierra Norte, following scenic mountain trails toward the summit of Pelado Chiquito and its wildfire lookout tower, where spectacular panoramic views await.

Pelado Chiquito Summit

Reach the summit of Pelado Chiquito, where the final 100 meters offer an easy-to-moderate challenge that most active travelers can comfortably manage. If open, climb the wildfire lookout tower for breathtaking views of the Sierra Norte and a side of Oaxaca that even many locals rarely experience. Take time to catch your breath, enjoy a snack, capture memorable photos, and appreciate how these mountains have shaped local life for centuries before beginning the descent—the second half of our 6.8 km hike—followed by a well-earned traditional lunch.

Return to Trailhead

After completing the hike, we'll arrive back at the trailhead, board the vehicle, and enjoy a scenic 20-minute drive to a local restaurant. Along the way, we'll relax, admire the mountain landscapes, chat about the day's adventure, and recap what we've learned about the Sierra Norte, its forests, wildlife, and the communities that call these mountains home before enjoying a tradional Serrano meal.

A Taste of the Sierra Norte

Savor a traditional lunch in the heart of the Sierra Norte, prepared with fresh local ingredients and recipes rooted in the region's culinary heritage. Depending on the season, dishes may feature endemic herbs and native flavors unique to these mountains. Enjoy freshly baked bread made with pulque, a cup of rich Oaxacan hot chocolate or another traditional beverage, and choose from delicious vegan and vegetarian options before continuing your journey refreshed.

Relax on the scenic drive back to Oaxaca City as we reflect on the day's adventure through the Sierra Norte. * This hike is suitable for travelers with a moderate level of fitness. The trail is approximately 6.8 km (4.2 mi) and includes a steady ascent over uneven terrain.

* The final 100 meters to the summit require an easy-to-moderate effort but are manageable for most active hikers.

* This experience is not recommended for guests with serious mobility, knee, back, or heart conditions and is not wheelchair accessible.

* Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good traction and bring a reusable water bottle.

* A hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light jacket are recommended, as mountain weather can change quickly.

* Breakfast is not included. Please eat before departure or bring a light snack for the hike.

* Lunch is not included. Vegan and vegetarian options are available.
