Meeting Point

German Fountain, Sultanahmet Square

- We’ll meet beside the German Fountain in Sultanahmet Square, near the Hippodrome. I’ll confirm the exact meeting spot with you before the tour. We’ll begin with a short conversation about your interests and the day ahead.

Hippodrome: Life in an Imperial Capital

We begin with the Hippodrome and its surviving monuments, exploring the races, crowds and public life of Byzantine Constantinople. I’ll use this open space to introduce the city’s changing history and find out which stories interest you most. The schedule is approximate; we may adjust the order and time at each stop for queues, access and your pace, within our seven-hour day.

Blue Mosque: Looking Closely at Ottoman Architecture

At the Blue Mosque, we’ll look at how space, light and decoration work together. I’ll point out details that help you read the building and connect its architecture with its role as a place of worship today. Interior access is subject to prayer times and visitor arrangements.

Hagia Sophia: Istanbul’s Changing Story

Hagia Sophia brings together the different periods that shaped Istanbul. We’ll explore its history and architecture, connecting what we see with the wider Byzantine and Ottoman worlds. The visitor route and access arrangements will be checked for your date, and any change to the planned visit will be discussed before booking.

Lunch Break: Time for Local Flavours

We’ll pause for lunch at a local restaurant chosen with your preferences in mind. This is time to rest, talk and enjoy the food as part of the day. The lunch break is included in the seven-hour tour duration; food and drinks are paid separately.

Topkapı Palace: Power and Everyday Life

At Topkapı Palace, we’ll focus on selected courtyards and main sections to explore how the Ottoman court worked and how people lived within it. Harem access is not promised as part of the standard route and can be discussed when planning your day. The palace is closed on Tuesdays; for Tuesday tours we will agree on an alternative, such as the Basilica Cistern, before booking.

Grand Bazaar: Trade and the Living City

We finish with a walk through the Grand Bazaar, connecting Istanbul’s trading history with the shops and daily life around us. We can focus on architecture, crafts or browsing according to your interests, with no obligation to shop. The bazaar is closed on Sundays; a suitable alternative and ending point will be agreed before booking. Our planned finish is around 4:00 PM.

What‘s not included

Topkapi Palace admission, including the Harem: currently TRY 2750 per foreign adult at the standard rate. Tickets are purchased separately, and prices may change.

Transportation to the meeting point and from the end of the tour.

Topkapi Palace is the only stop requiring an admission ticket. The Blue Mosque, Hippodrome and Grand Bazaar are free to visit. Hagia Sophia is viewed from outside only.

Tour Important Information

This tour starts at 09:00 and operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, subject to my availability. It is not available on Tuesdays, Fridays or Sundays. Visits may be affected by public or religious holiday closures.

About Tour Guide Haluk T.

Hi, I’m Haluk, a licensed tour guide and a fourth-generation Istanbulite. I was born and raised here, and I enjoy sharing both the city’s history and the changes I’ve seen in its neighbourhoods during my own lifetime.

For me, a good tour starts with getting to know you. I like to spend the first few minutes understanding your interests and finding a pace that suits you. Some guests enjoy detailed conversations about history and architecture; others prefer a broader introduction, with time for local food, questions and a tea or coffee break.

I received my guiding licence in 1997 and returned to tourism full-time in 2011 after a career in banking. Guiding Turkish groups in Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Egypt has also shaped how I explain my own city. I enjoy connecting Istanbul’s history, architecture and traditions with the wider Mediterranean world.

We might explore the imperial monuments of the Old City, walk through Fener and Balat, or cross to Kadıköy for its markets, local restaurants and bookshops. I particularly enjoy helping guests start a conversation with people they might otherwise simply walk past, including booksellers I know on the Asian side.
