Dapeng Fortress, the source of Shenzhen’s nickname “Pengcheng”, was built in 1394 in the Ming Dynasty. It was an important coastal military stronghold to resist pirates.

As one of China’s best-preserved Ming coastal forts, it witnessed the Kowloon Naval Battle, the prelude to the First Opium War. Inside the fortress are ancient city walls, stone alleys, generals’ mansions and old temples.

Hakka, garrison and marine cultures blend here. Walking through the old lanes, you can see what ancient Shenzhen looked like and learn about local residents’ life centuries ago.

Dongshan Temple sits on Longtoushi Mountain east of Dapeng Fortress. Built in 1394 at the same time as the ancient fortress, this 600-year-old Lingnan Zen temple faces Daya Bay with hills behind it. After several reconstructions, it retains the layout of a traditional coastal Buddhist temple.

For generations, it has been the spiritual home of local residents. In ancient times, garrison soldiers, fishermen and Hakka villagers came here to pray for safe voyages and family well-being. To local people, it is far more than a historic site; it is a cherished place of faith passed down through centuries. Surrounded by mountains and sea, the temple lets you experience the folk belief culture of ancient Shenzhen.

Jiaochangwei is just across the road from Dapeng Fortress. Its name dates back to the Ming Dynasty, when this area served as a training ground for garrison troops.

It is a coastal fishing village with a long stretch of beach, rare in Shenzhen so close to ancient ruins. Once home to fishermen, it has now become a charming seaside town filled with boutique homestays.
