At your hotel lobby if the hotel is in the city center OR in front of the south entrance to Diocletian's palace, on Riva promenade
We are starting the tour on Riva promenade in front of Diocletian's palace. After a short introduction, we are visiting the Basement level of the palace - the best preserved part of the Roman palace that explains the emperor Diocletian's lifestyle in this magnificent piece of architecture (for a fee; optional).
The main square of the Roman palace - Peristil square - was used as a site of an important ritual in the 4th century. It was a place where the emperor was worshipped as a living deity by his subjects! On that square we will visit ex-Diocletian's mausoleum that later became St. Domnius's Cathedral, and ex-Jupiter's temple that was later turned into a baptistery (for a fee; optional). What a transformation!
After leaving the palace through the Golden gate (main entrance), we are proceeding to a medieval neighbourhood that developed after the 13th century with plenty narrow streets that show the hustle and bustle of a modern lifestyle squeezed into old streets: shops, restaurants, cafés, taverns... On the way we are going to see some famous squares in Split: Pjaca, Prokurative and Fruit square.
