“A wonderful day at Dendera, with a few caveats”

Our day began with pickup from Luxor Airport before heading to the Dendera Temple Complex, which was absolutely astounding. I can already see it being a highlight of our trip. We could easily have spent much longer exploring it. Ali, who organised the tour, had been involved in a motor accident and couldn’t accompany us. However, he arranged for his colleague Mohamed to take over, and he was great. Mohamed shared so much information about Luxor, ancient Egyptian history and the temple itself, making the experience all the more rewarding. Our driver was also pleasant. Where things were a little less enjoyable was with the additional stops. We declined an offered visit to an oil and perfume shop but did stop at an alabaster factory. We were genuinely interested in seeing the craftsmanship and finding something special to take home. However, the heavily inflated starting prices and expectation to haggle made the experience less enjoyable than anticipated. We would have preferred a more authentic experience without the pressure of negotiating. Lunch was another consideration. The traditional Egyptian food was lovely, and we thoroughly enjoyed it, but the pricing was extraordinarily high for what was provided. A 300ml bottle of Coke cost approximately AUD $18, and lunch came to around AUD $50. For food available elsewhere in Egypt for a fraction of the price, it felt excessive. Ultimately, we had a wonderful day and Mohamed’s knowledge was a real highlight. We perhaps had a different expectation of what a private, tailored tour would offer, hoping to move away from the more commercial aspects of tourism and focus on the history and culture that make Egypt so special. We would absolutely recommend Dendera and appreciated Mohamed’s expertise. We also want to acknowledge Ali, whose communication and organisation were excellent. Despite his accident, he went out of his way to arrange a replacement guide rather than cancel our tour. We were very grateful for his efforts.

“Great guide for Aswan ”

Hamada was a fantastic guide in Aswan. He was flexible and changed the itinerary when the heat was too much for us. We enjoyed the Philae Temple and a gorgeous botanical garden. He was very personable and enjoyable to be around. I highly recommend him if you visit Aswan.
