Devprayag – Sangam of Alaknanda & Bhagirathi

Devprayag is one of the Panch Prayag (five sacred river confluences) of Uttarakhand and marks the official beginning of the River Ganga, where:

Alaknanda River

Bhagirathi River

merge to form the sacred Ganges (Ganga).

Located about 70 km from Rishikesh on the Badrinath highway, Devprayag is not just a stopover — it’s a deeply spiritual town filled with mythology, ancient temples, and powerful river energy. Raghunath Temple : Historical & Religious Significance

Dedicated to Lord Rama (Raghunath).

Believed to be over 1,000 years old.

The idol of Lord Rama is said to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya.

The temple architecture reflects traditional Garhwali stone temple style.

According to legend:

After defeating Ravana, Lord Rama performed penance here to atone for killing a Brahmin (Ravana was a Brahmin king). Devprayag is thus associated with purification and spiritual cleansing.

The Sacred Sangam Experience

The most powerful experience in Devprayag is standing at the Sangam Ghat, where you clearly see:

Green waters of Alaknanda

Darker waters of Bhagirathi

Merging into one stream — the Ganga

Pilgrims take ritual baths here, believing it washes away sins and grants spiritual merit.

The entire town feels like an open-air spiritual museum.

70 km from Rishikesh (2–3 hrs drive)

If you're creating travel content, combining Devprayag + Vashistha Cave + Rishikesh makes a strong spiritual day-trip narrative.

Vashistha Cave Rishikesh

Vashistha Cave, also known as Vashistha Gufa, is an ancient natural cave on the banks of the holy Ganges River, believed to be the meditation site of Sage Vashistha, one of the revered Saptarishis (seven great sages) in Hindu tradition.

According to Hindu mythology:

Sage Vashistha — a manas putra (mind-born son) of Lord Brahma — meditated here for extended periods in deep penance and contemplation.

It is also believed he came here after tragic events in his life and found spiritual refuge beside the Ganga.

The cave is spiritually significant — attracting yogis, monks, pilgrims, and seekers for meditation and inner peace.

Distance: ~25 km from Rishikesh city center on the Rishikesh–Badrinath Highway (towards Devprayag/Shivpuri).

Accessible by taxi, private vehicle, bike, or local buses that run towards Devprayag.

To enter the cave, you descend a flight of ~200 steps from the roadside parking or trail area down toward the river and the cave entrance.
