Pompeii as an archaeological site is so large that one can easily get lost. That is of course because it was once a pinnacle of Roman civilization. Tragically, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice by the devastating Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The site is constantly evolving, thanks to ongoing excavations that yield new discoveries every year. A professional private guide is highly recommended for a more detailed and relaxing visit to its most important structures. Cantina del Vesuvio Winery

The Vesuvius Cellars, located on the lower hills of the volcano, offer spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples. The program includes a guided tour of the 4-hectare winery near the Pompeii archaeological site, amidst historical remains, vineyards, and the elegant winery facilities. The tour concludes with a tasting of a variety of wines and a traditional Neapolitan menu of dishes inspired by ancient Rome. Not included in the tour price.

Herculaneum ruins

The Herculaneum excavations have revealed the remains of the ancient residential city, buried under a blanket of lava, ash, lapilli, and mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, along with Pompeii, Stabiae, and Oplontis.
