Meeting Point
JKIA Airport or Around Nairobi Area
- Your guide will meet you at the agreed pickup location in Nairobi (hotel, airport, or city center) or at Nanyuki if arranged in advance. For guests traveling directly to Tharaka, the meeting point is our family homestead. Exact directions, GPS location, and contact details will be shared after your booking is confirmed. Depart from Nairobi and begin your scenic journey to Tharaka, passing through the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya.
Day 1
Arrive at your traditional Tharaka homestead. Enjoy a freshly prepared local breakfast and receive a warm welcome from your host family.
Rangers Trail - Marimanti
Introduction to life in a Tharaka homestead. Learn about the history of the Tharaka people, daily routines, traditional housing, family life, sustainable farming practices, indigenous herbs, medicinal plants, livestock keeping, and how communities thrive in Kenya's drylands.
Rangers Trail - Marimanti
Participate in preparing a traditional Tharaka goat feast. Learn how the goat is traditionally prepared, seasoned with local herbs and spices, and slowly marinated for the evening nyama choma.
Marimanti Local Market
Guided walk through the surrounding community and village. Visit the local market, interact with residents, observe traditional trading practices, and experience everyday life in a living Bantu community.
Back to your hosts homestead
Return to the homestead to freshen up and relax.
7:00 PM – Enjoy a traditional nyama choma dinner prepared with your host family, followed by stories, songs, and conversations around the fire as you learn about Tharaka culture and oral traditions.
Day 2 – Sacred Landscapes, Oral Traditions & Living Culture
Wake up to the sounds of the village and enjoy a traditional homemade breakfast.
Kijege Hill/Ntugi Hills/ Kathita and Thagana River
Depart for a guided exploration of Tharaka's sacred landscapes. Visit culturally significant hills, rivers, and ancient sites while learning about the spiritual beliefs, oral traditions, and history of one of Kenya's oldest Bantu communities.
Walk through the dryland bush with your local guide, identifying indigenous trees, medicinal plants, edible fruits, and traditional herbs used by the Tharaka people for generations.
Rangers Trail - Marimanti
Return to the homestead for a freshly prepared traditional lunch and time to relax.
Tharaka Green Gold - Marimanti
Experience traditional honey harvesting and brewing followed by hands-on sisal processing, basket weaving, and local crafts with community artisans. Learn how these skills continue to support families and preserve Tharaka heritage. Afterwards you can swim at a guided river bank. Enjoy private time to relax, review photographs, work using the fast Wi-Fi, or interact with your host family.
Rangers Trail - Marimanti
Gather around the fire for traditional songs, storytelling, and conversations with local elders about Tharaka history, customs, and the community's connection to the land.
Enjoy a home-cooked traditional dinner before retiring for the night.
Day 3 – Meru National Park Excursion via Ura Gate
Wake up early and enjoy a traditional breakfast before departing for an exciting wildlife adventure.
Safari Drive to Meru National Park
Drive to Ura Gate, one of the access points to Meru National Park. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of the Tharaka drylands, seasonal rivers, and the transition into one of Kenya's most diverse wilderness areas.
8:00 AM – Enter Meru National Park through Ura Gate and begin a guided game drive. Explore the park's open grasslands, riverine forests, acacia woodlands, and swamps while searching for its remarkable wildlife.

Visit scenic viewpoints near the Tana River and enjoy opportunities for wildlife photography and birdwatching while learning about Meru National Park's conservation efforts and its connection to the legendary conservationists George and Joy Adamson.
- Picnic lunch or lunch at a designated park picnic site surrounded by nature.
– Continue your game drive, exploring more of the park's unique landscapes before exiting through Ura Gate.
– Return to the Tharaka homestead to relax and freshen up.
Last Night at the homestead
Enjoy your final evening with the host family. Share a farewell traditional dinner, reflect on your experiences, exchange stories, and celebrate your time in Tharaka with music, songs, and cultural performances around the fire.
Day 4 – Farewell to Tharaka & Departure
Wake up and enjoy a final traditional breakfast with your host family.
8:00 AM – Spend your last moments at the homestead reflecting on your experience, taking photographs with your hosts, exchanging contacts, and learning a few final Tharaka greetings and expressions.
9:00 AM – Farewell ceremony with the family, featuring blessings, traditional songs, and the presentation of a small locally made souvenir as a reminder of your journey through one of Kenya's oldest Bantu communities.
11:00 AM – Depart from the homestead and begin the scenic drive back to Nairobi, with optional stops along the way for refreshments and photography.
Arrive in Nairobi and be dropped off at your hotel, residence, or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, marking the end of your unforgettable Tharaka Cultural Immersion experience.

Hello! I'm Lewis from Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. I'm a documentary filmmaker, a cultural storyteller, and the host of an authentic family homestead where travellers can experience real rural life beyond the usual tourist routes. I enjoy welcoming people from around the world and sharing the traditions, history, and daily life of the Tharaka people, one of East Kenya's oldest Bantu communities.
Our homestead offers a genuine cultural exchange where you'll live with a local family, enjoy home-cooked meals, participate in farming and community activities, and learn through storytelling and shared experiences. We also organise visits to the beautiful Meru National Park and nearby cultural and natural sites.
Whether you're a volunteer, traveller, photographer, filmmaker, researcher, or simply curious about authentic Kenyan culture, you'll be welcomed with warmth, respect, and the opportunity to create meaningful memories while becoming part of our community.
