08:30 AM

Meeting Point

At the lobby at the Port

- Meeting at Incheon Cruise Terminal: Look for your name on my pickup sign.

10:00 AM

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), a kingdom built upon Confucian philosophy and a sophisticated governing system. As we walk through the palace grounds, you will discover how architecture, political ideals, and nature were harmonized to express the order of the state. The palace was not simply a royal residence; it was the symbolic center of governance where kings ruled, scholars advised the court, and the Confucian vision of society was implemented.

You will see the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon), royal council spaces, and the carefully planned layout that reflected Joseon’s hierarchy and worldview. Along the way, I will explain how Korea adopted and adapted the classical Confucian system of governance while shaping its own political culture. This helps explain long-lasting values in Korean society such as education, meritocracy, and the role of scholarship in government.

Damaged during periods of foreign invasions and later restored, Gyeongbokgung also reflects the resilience of Korean history.

By the time we leave the palace, you will not only have seen impressive royal architecture, but also gained insight into the political philosophy and governing principles that shaped Korea for more than five centuries.

12:10 PM

Bukchon Hanok Village

We then walk to Bukchon Hanok Village, a historic neighborhood located between the royal palaces. During the Joseon period, this area developed as a prestigious residential district for scholar-officials who served the royal court. Living close to the palace and major government institutions reflected both status and responsibility within the governing elite of the kingdom.

As we explore the quiet lanes of Bukchon, you will see traditional hanok houses that illustrate how architecture, daily life, and Confucian values were closely connected. The design of these homes reveals ideas about family hierarchy, harmony with nature, and the social order that shaped Joseon society.

At the same time, Bukchon also tells a story of transformation. While the neighborhood preserves the atmosphere of historic Seoul, its landscape has evolved over time, reflecting the changes of a modern city built upon centuries of tradition.

Walking through Bukchon allows us to understand not only how people lived in the past, but also how historical layers continue to exist within contemporary Seoul.

01:00 PM

Insadong cultural district

Insadong has long been known as a center of traditional culture in Seoul. The streets are lined with galleries, calligraphy shops, antique stores, traditional tea houses, and small craft boutiques.

This area reflects the continuity of Korean artistic and intellectual traditions. Walking through Insadong offers a glimpse into the atmosphere where traditional aesthetics, craftsmanship, and everyday urban life meet in modern Seoul.

03:00 PM

Myeong dong shopping district

Myeongdong is one of the liveliest districts in Seoul and a symbol of the city’s modern commercial culture. The area is famous for its vibrant streets filled with fashion boutiques, cosmetics shops, cafés, and food stalls.

It offers a vivid contrast to the historical sites visited earlier in the tour and provides a glimpse of contemporary urban life in Seoul before returning to the cruise port.

04:00 PM

About Tour Guide Andy P.

Historian Guide | Korea’s Past and Modern Transformation

Understanding Korea takes more than memorized history. It helps to explore the country with someone who has experienced its transformation firsthand.

Hello, I’m Andy, a licensed English-speaking Korean tour guide with the highest-level Korean History certification, an MBA, and a background in chemical engineering.

Before becoming a guide, I spent over 25 years in Korea’s gas and petrochemical industries, working with major Korean corporations and witnessing the country’s remarkable industrial and economic transformation.

My tours connect royal dynasties and traditional philosophy with industrialization, contemporary society, architecture, and art. Rather than simply presenting dates and landmarks, I help travelers understand the bigger picture of Korea.

I occasionally use specially curated visual insight cards to make complex historical and cultural connections accessible and engaging. Having lived in Indonesia and Vietnam for nearly a decade, I also bring an international perspective to our conversations.

Each tour is thoughtfully tailored to your interests, pace, and priorities. I also design customized multi-day journeys to Gyeongju, Andong, and Busan.

For vehicle-based tours, I use a 2025 Hyundai Staria Hybrid for a quiet and comfortable private travel experience.

I look forward to exploring Korea with you.

“Highly recommend Andy”

Andy was incredibly generous with sharing his knowledge and time with our group. He was helpful with recommendations even before our day together. We were able to focus on the sights of Seoul rather than the the stress of navigating. We appreciated the hotel pick up and his detailed answers to our many questions. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you, Andy! Thank you!

Thank you so much. It was a real pleasure spending the day with you and your group. I especially enjoyed our conversations ranging from Korean history and society to Korea–U.S. relations, and the architecture and symbolism of palaces and hanok. I truly appreciated your thoughtful questions and your genuine interest in understanding Korea beyond the surface. Wishing you all wonderful and safe onward travels!

“ Excellent introduction to Korea, its past, its present and its challenges”

I had the chance of following Andy for 2 days: we went to the museum where he gave me a comprehensive briefing on Korea's past. We then drove to the Royal Palace and to the Bukchon Village. While I was comfortably seated in his car, he spoke about Korea's present and, the next day, when we visited the DMZ, he spoke about the war and the challenges Korea is facing today. He even prepared a brochure with the most relevant facts to look up and to refer to. I had an issue with my cellphone's internet connection and Andy was very helpful in calming me down and in trying to find a solution.
