09:30 AM

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), a kingdom built upon Confucian philosophy and a sophisticated governing system. As we walk through the palace grounds, you will discover how architecture, political ideals, and nature were harmonized to express the order of the state. The palace was not simply a royal residence; it was the symbolic center of governance where kings ruled, scholars advised the court, and the Confucian vision of society was implemented.

You will see the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon), royal council spaces, and the carefully planned layout that reflected Joseon’s hierarchy and worldview. Along the way, I will explain how Korea adopted and adapted the classical Confucian system of governance while shaping its own political culture. This helps explain long-lasting values in Korean society such as education, meritocracy, and the role of scholarship in government.

Damaged during periods of foreign invasions and later restored, Gyeongbokgung also reflects the resilience of Korean history.

By the time we leave the palace, you will not only have seen impressive royal architecture, but also gained insight into the political philosophy and governing principles that shaped Korea for more than five centuries.

11:00 AM

Bukchon Hanok Village

We then walk to Bukchon Hanok Village, a historic neighborhood located between the royal palaces. During the Joseon period, this area developed as a prestigious residential district for scholar-officials who served the royal court. Living close to the palace and major government institutions reflected both status and responsibility within the governing elite of the kingdom.

As we explore the quiet lanes of Bukchon, you will see traditional hanok houses that illustrate how architecture, daily life, and Confucian values were closely connected. The design of these homes reveals ideas about family hierarchy, harmony with nature, and the social order that shaped Joseon society.

At the same time, Bukchon also tells a story of transformation. While the neighborhood preserves the atmosphere of historic Seoul, its landscape has evolved over time, reflecting the changes of a modern city built upon centuries of tradition.

Walking through Bukchon allows us to understand not only how people lived in the past, but also how historical layers continue to exist within contemporary Seoul.

12:10 AM

National Museum of Korea

Our final stop is the National Museum of Korea, one of the largest museums in Asia and an ideal place to understand the long arc of Korean civilization. Here we move beyond the Joseon period to explore a much deeper timeline that spans more than four thousand years.

Through carefully selected artifacts—from ancient bronze objects and early kingdoms to Buddhist art and refined ceramics—you will see how Korean culture developed across different eras. Rather than walking through the entire museum, we focus on key pieces that reveal major turning points in Korean history and cultural identity.

I will explain how ideas, technologies, and artistic traditions traveled across East Asia while Korea developed its own distinctive cultural expression. This approach helps visitors understand not only what these artifacts are, but why they matter in the broader story of Korean civilization.

By the end of this visit, the earlier sites of the tour—Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village—will appear in a larger historical perspective. The museum ties everything together, allowing you to see Korea not simply as a modern country, but as a civilization shaped by centuries of cultural continuity and change.

Excellent introduction to Korea, its past, its present and its challenges

I had the chance of following Andy for 2 days: we went to the museum where he gave me a comprehensive briefing on Korea's past. We then drove to the Royal Palace and to the Bukchon Village. While I was comfortably seated in his car, he spoke about Korea's present and, the next day, when we visited the DMZ, he spoke about the war and the challenges Korea is facing today. He even prepared a brochure with the most relevant facts to look up and to refer to. I had an issue with my cellphone's internet connection and Andy was very helpful in calming me down and in trying to find a solution.

A great tour with Andy!

Andy provided an enjoyable and informative tour. His itinerary flowed well, and provided a look at a variety of interesting neighborhoods in Seoul that all had their own distinct character. His deep knowledge of Korean history added so much to the day. Andy also went above and beyond in helping with a little bit of shopping at the end of the tour. Thank you Andy for a great day!

Fascinating visit to the DMZ with Andy

Four of us were on a cruise ship docked at Incheon and organised the day trip to the DMZ on gowithguide several months in advance. Andy was waiting in the cruise ship terminal when we disembarked and had his luxurious people carrier parked close by. After a short drive, we arrived at the DMZ, visited tunnel number 3, the observation tower and the Gloucester Regiment memorial. Andy was good company, informative and with a good sense of humour. He got us back to the dock in plenty time for our departure and we would certainly recommend him to anyone planning a visit to the Seoul or Incheon area.

I’m very glad everything worked smoothly with the ship schedule and that you were able to experience the Third Tunnel, the observatory and the Gloucester Regiment memorial. Your group was wonderful company, and I truly enjoyed our conversations throughout the day. Thank you again for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. Andy
