The Palace was built by El glaoui the famous and most powerful Pasha(Lord)of Marrakech and High Atlas at the beginning of the 20th century. The palace has several beautifully decorated courtyards lined with Zelij tile work, stucco work, painted wood and stalactites. One part of the building gathers a museum, The Jewish heritage, Islamic culture, African Art, donations of Patty Birtch, Mr.&Mrs Hermès, Yves Saint Laurent and a fine Andalusian garden planted with fruit trees.
The origins of Le Jardin Secret hark back to the second half of the sixteenth century. Today the green spaces of Le Jardin Secret are divided into an exotic garden and an Islamic garden. The importance of the building, first demonstrated by its large size, is underlined by the presence of a private hammam, the qubba and the tower: towering above the medina.Le Jardin Secret, which had, therefore, its own water supply, a rare privilege and an additional sign of wealth. We can still see the visible vestiges of the riad’s original water system, made up of pipes, reservoirs and canals cleverly linked together.(Approx.45mns-1h.)
The original 14th century Medersa Ben Youssef was rebuilt by Abdullah el Ghaleb, the Saadian made it the largest quranic school in Morocco in a deliberate attempt to snub the imams of Fez the religious center of the country .The Medersa is an old university to teach islamic law. its rectangular pool reflects both the beauty of blue Marrakech sky and the carved plaster walls and cedar ceilings from the sixteenth century.
