Hands-on Yakisugi Experience — The Beauty of Burnt Wood
Experience Yakisugi, the traditional Japanese technique of preserving wood by fire. Using locally sourced wood (mainly Japanese larch), you’ll craft a small, lightweight card stand by burning, brushing, and oiling it. Guided by me and a skilled carpenter, no experience is needed — all tools and protective gear, including overalls and gloves, are provided. Walking pick-up is available; streetcar fare is extra. Take home your handmade card stand, a perfect souvenir of authentic craftsmanship.

“Great experience and fun tour of Hakodate”
Bobby was simply great! Her experience and knowledge gave us our own experiences that we would have never had by touring by ourselves.

Dear Rick, Thank you so much for your wonderful review, especially so soon despite your busy schedule! I truly enjoyed our tour together. More than anything, I loved your energy and cheerful spirit. You made the day so much fun for me too. Thank you for choosing Hakodate, and for letting me be a part of your journey! Please give my best regards to everyone. Warm regards, Bobby

“Insights into much more than Hakodate's tourism highlights”
Our tour with Bobby was the highlight of our 3 days visit in Hakodate. More than just sharing her knowledge of the area where she lives and grew up, Bobby made us all feel very comfortable, as if we were in between old friends. Soon we ended up sharing our traveling at first, then our life experience, back and forth. It was deep and enlightening. She did a great job connecting well with myself, my wife (GenX) and our much younger son (GenZ). If you are interested by more than knowledge and anecdotes about places and history, going into the depth of culture and life experience in Japan versus your own, Bobby is your guide.

Dear Pierre, There couldn't have been a better way to end a busy day than reading your wonderful review. Thank you so much for your kind words. They truly touched my heart. As I read your message, I found myself smiling and remembering all the conversations we shared throughout the day. It was such a joy getting to know you, your wife, and your son. When the Shinkansen was delayed, I honestly wasn't sure if our tour would happen. But you didn't give up, and you still made the trip to Hakodate. I can't tell you how happy that made me. Because of your determination, we were able to spend such a memorable and meaningful day together. Please give my warmest regards to your cheerful and kind wife and your hardworking son. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your journey as much as I enjoyed spending the day with all of you. I hope our paths cross again someday! Until then, I wish you and your family many more wonderful adventures together. Your friend, Bobby

Dear Joe & Helena, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. I couldn't have asked for a more meaningful review. I hope the matcha is well received. It was a bit chilly, but that only made the ramen taste even better! I look forward to the day we can meet again. Thank you for finding me and choosing me as your guide. Warmest regards, Bobby

Hi! I'm Aya, now based in the Sapporo area from June 2026! After growing up in Hokkaido, I graduated from college in New York and have lived in 7 cities across Japan, Canada, and the United States. Exploring the world allows me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds while sharing Japan through both a local and international perspective. I've also traveled Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and Latin America, and love learning about history, different story of local people. <My Hosting Style> I love sharing the side of Japan that many visitors never get to see, from local culture and everyday life to hidden food spots and the stories behind them. Whether you are interested in food, nature, culture, art, music, or simply experiencing Japan from a local perspective, I tailor each experience to your interests, mood, personality, and travel style. <My Experience> Over the years, I have guided amazing guests from east to west, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and now Hokkaido. I especially enjoy hosting culturally curious travelers who seek meaningful experiences, authentic local connections, and a deeper understanding of Japan beyond the typical tourist route. My guests often tell me that spending time with me feels more like exploring with a knowledgeable local friend, and many ask me to guide them again on their next journey through Japan. I look forward to hearing from you and helping create a memorable experience in Japan :) P.S. I've lived in Vancouver Canada, Upstate New York, New York City, Tokyo, Osaka, and now the Sapporo area in Hokkaido!
