Koryu-ji Temple: A Hidden Zen Sanctuary *90-minute stay in total
During our visit, we will explore Koryu-ji Temple, the oldest temple still standing in Hakodate. The temple grounds feature ten buildings designated as Japan’s Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, and its main gate alone boasts 207 intricate carvings. You will also see the majestic main hall and bell tower while learning about the temple’s role in Hakodate’s history and the cultural traditions of Japanese Buddhism.
Next, you’ll take part in a short zazen (seated meditation) session, lasting around 15 minutes. No previous experience is necessary, and chair seating is available for those who prefer it. The focus is simply on breathing, posture, and stillness, providing an accessible way to experience the essence of Zen practice.
For those interested, we also offer an optional shakyo (sutra tracing) session, lasting about 15–20 minutes. Shakyo is a form of meditative calligraphy, where you silently copy a Buddhist sutra by hand. It’s a calming activity that helps quiet the mind and connect with the spirit of Zen.
Whether you’re curious about Japanese Buddhism, looking to slow down, or simply wish to appreciate the quiet beauty of a historic site, Koryu-ji Temple offers a peaceful and memorable cultural experience.
*Departure time: 11:00 AM

Motomachi: Traces of Hakodate’s International Past *90-minute stay
After leaving the quiet grounds of Koryu-ji Temple, we make our way downhill into Motomachi, one of Hakodate’s most scenic and historically rich neighborhoods. This area flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Hakodate opened its port to foreign trade. Today, it still reflects a unique blend of Japanese and Western influences.
As we stroll through the gently sloping streets, you’ll pass by Western-style buildings, old foreign consulates, European-influenced churches, and elegant homes once occupied by traders, diplomats, and missionaries. The area’s distinct architectural charm—combined with panoramic harbor views—offers endless photo opportunities and a true sense of place.
Highlights may include the Former British Consulate, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, Hakodate Orthodox Church, and the iconic Hachimanzaka slope, a local favorite for its picture-perfect view of the bay.
Throughout the walk, your guide will share stories of cultural exchange, foreign influence, and how this small port city became a gateway between Japan and the world.
This leisurely walk offers a refreshing contrast to the stillness of the temple, revealing another side of Hakodate’s rich cultural heritage.

Dear Roger, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review so quickly! It truly means a lot to me. After our tour yesterday, I hope you had a chance to enjoy the Hakodate Port Festival parade with some delicious Hokkaido beer! I imagine you’re enjoying Aomori by now. The Nebuta Festival tonight should be an unforgettable experience! Spending the day with you both was such a pleasure. From the moment we met until we said goodbye, I was surrounded by your kindness, warmth, and wonderful energy. Next time you visit Hakodate, I’d love to spend a whole day hiking Mt. Hakodate with you. Around 60% of Hokkaido’s native plant species can be found there, so I think you’d both really enjoy exploring it at a relaxed pace. Thank you again for choosing me as your guide. I’m truly grateful our paths crossed, and I hope to see you both again someday! Warm regards, Bobby

“Great experience and fun tour of Hakodate”
Bobby was simply great! Her experience and knowledge gave us our own experiences that we would have never had by touring by ourselves.

Dear Rick, Thank you so much for your wonderful review, especially so soon despite your busy schedule! I truly enjoyed our tour together. More than anything, I loved your energy and cheerful spirit. You made the day so much fun for me too. Thank you for choosing Hakodate, and for letting me be a part of your journey! Please give my best regards to everyone. Warm regards, Bobby

“Insights into much more than Hakodate's tourism highlights”
Our tour with Bobby was the highlight of our 3 days visit in Hakodate. More than just sharing her knowledge of the area where she lives and grew up, Bobby made us all feel very comfortable, as if we were in between old friends. Soon we ended up sharing our traveling at first, then our life experience, back and forth. It was deep and enlightening. She did a great job connecting well with myself, my wife (GenX) and our much younger son (GenZ). If you are interested by more than knowledge and anecdotes about places and history, going into the depth of culture and life experience in Japan versus your own, Bobby is your guide.

Dear Pierre, There couldn't have been a better way to end a busy day than reading your wonderful review. Thank you so much for your kind words. They truly touched my heart. As I read your message, I found myself smiling and remembering all the conversations we shared throughout the day. It was such a joy getting to know you, your wife, and your son. When the Shinkansen was delayed, I honestly wasn't sure if our tour would happen. But you didn't give up, and you still made the trip to Hakodate. I can't tell you how happy that made me. Because of your determination, we were able to spend such a memorable and meaningful day together. Please give my warmest regards to your cheerful and kind wife and your hardworking son. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your journey as much as I enjoyed spending the day with all of you. I hope our paths cross again someday! Until then, I wish you and your family many more wonderful adventures together. Your friend, Bobby
