Secrets of London's St James' quarter (2 hrs)

London
2 hours

St James's is one of the most unspoiled and attractive parts of London. It also contains the senior royal residence (St James's Palace) and the oldest Royal Park. This walk aims not just to have a very enjoyable wander around the handsome square and beautiful streets and alleys, but also to understand why, how and when the area was developed. Why does it remain so posh and "mannish"? What explains its location and character?

Trading Place: Commercial London (2 hrs)

London
2 hours

For nearly 2000 years people have lived and worked in the City, constantly focusing on “doing deals” and making money. This walk aims to bring to life how Londoners have conducted their “dealing” over two millennia, focusing on the most pivotal Roman, Medieval, Early Modern and more recent examples of “doing deals”. Brexit and Covid are providing the next set of challenges: it is interesting to reflect on this past as we think about how the City will adapt and keep “dealing”.

The Great Fire of London (2 hrs)

London

Starting in a bakery in Pudding Lane, the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed two thirds of the City. This walk aims to bring to life how the disaster started and unfolded, how people reacted, how the authorities responded: and as we recover from Covid we will explore some striking parallels about how leaders react and promote their actions and policies.

The Beatles: Abbey Road plus (2.5 hrs)

London
2 hours 30 min

The Beatles are often referred to as a Liverpool band. Of course they started there, but as soon as they started recording they moved to London and from February 1963 did all of their recording, living and loving there. So there are many places (if you know where to look) which allow you to trace key moments in their careers and lives: this walk takes you around the most important, finishing at the famous zebra crossing outside Abbey Road studios.

Tudor London: not just Henry VIIIth (2 hrs)

London
2 hours

The "big" Tudor monarchs loom large in the popular imagination: especially Henry (all those wives!) and Elizabeth. The story of London under the Tudors is less well-known but fascinating. Massive population, huge growth in manufacturing and retail, explosion of popular literacy and printing, highly dangerous religious rifts: all fuelled by an enormous giveaway of city property at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This walk will bring all this to life.

Exploring Roman London (2 hrs)

London
2 hours

London would not exist as it does without the Romans: they founded the City when they invaded in 43BC. And despite c.2000 years having passed we can still see some traces off their time here. We will see several of these on our walk, including the City wall, the remains of the Temple of Mithras and of the Amphitheatre. But this walk also aims to dig a little deeper and explore why the Romans came, why they founded London and how it developed through the c.400 years of Roman rule.

Popular London Tour Guides

Bea P.

United Kingdom (UK)

Hello, My name is Bea. I am a City of Westminster Guide, offering highlights walks in Central London as well as theme walks that feature arts, history, royalty, and filming locations. As a Westminster Guide, my specialty is the borough of London where we find most of the historic and popular attractions, such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament with Elizabeth Tower (aka 'Big Ben'), but also four royal parks, the British Museum, the National Gallery, the learned societies and areas known as St James's, Covent Garden, Soho, Mayfair and Belgravia, to mention the most attractive ones. So the heart of monarchy, politics, as well as arts and science! :) Unlike many of my excellent colleagues here, I am not a driver guide, I offer walking tours only. I believe that the best way to get to know a city is on foot, pausing from time to time and looking up to take in the beauty and decipher the hidden messages of the buildings around us.

If you have mobility issues, I can accommodate my walks to your needs and can guarantee step-free walks (except for roadside kerbs) that are suitable for guests in wheelchair or with limited mobility. The advantage of a private walk is that we can take a break any time if you need.

I also have my own 'Vox Tour Guide System' which means that with the help of a pair of earphones connected to a tiny little box (the receiver that you can wear in your neck), you will not miss a word I am saying, even if we are standing by a busy a road, or you are taking photos a few meters away from me!

As a qualified teacher and former Mary Poppins (nanny) with an enhanced DBS, I am happy to guide families with children, and come up with suggestions regarding how to make the tour enjoyable for all age groups. The key to having fun while sightseeing with kids is considering their needs.

I look forward to guiding you!

 Best regards,
 Bea

My Tours are focused on a specific subject or area and aim to give you real depth of understanding, not just the "standard tourist story". Among the subjects are Roman London, the Tudor City, Trading and Commerce, Secret Gardens Hidden Churches, the Great Fire and the Beatles. A little about me – I am a Londoner (‘born and bred’ as the saying goes) and, following the rigorous training, in March 2005 I qualified as a registered Tourist Guide (with the Blue Badge tourist guiding qualification, the highest guiding qualification in the UK). Since then I have worked exclusively as a professional tourist guide. The Blue Badge qualification allows me to guide in key visitor sites such as Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. I have guided groups of all sizes (from single individual via couples, families and all through to double-decker bus parties of around 60 individuals). Since 2007 I have been personally recommended by American travel writer Rick Steves in his London and European guide books which has led to the opportunity to work with clients in developing the itineraries that best suited their needs and interests (taking into account factors such as venues opening days, dates, times and peak periods). For me guiding is both a privilege and a great pleasure. The last year has of course been tough for everyone involved in the Travel and Tourism industry and I have truly missed the day to day experience of guiding visitors in and around London and other locations (ie Windsor, Stonehenge). I am able to offer themed tours Iconic London, Shakespeare’s London, Beatles London and Hidden London (to name a few). My ethos is that visitors enjoy and are entertained by what they see and hear (and learn along the way!)
