Step away from West Lake and journey along the UNESCO World Heritage Grand Canal, the world’s longest and oldest artificial waterway. Instead of sitting in traffic, we will travel like true locals, exploring historic neighborhoods connected by walking paths and the iconic Canal Water Bus (Water Taxi).

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

Xiangji Temple & Dadou Road Historic District

- We begin our morning at Xiangji Temple, a hidden architectural marvel. Unlike traditional wood temples, this is China’s only temple built primarily of copper, reflecting the light beautifully. Afterward, we’ll take a quiet stroll down Dadou Road, a beautifully preserved riverside alley lined with traditional Qing-dynasty stone-gate houses.

10:30 AM

Local Experience: The Grand Canal Water Bus

Time to hop on the water! We will walk to the nearby pier and board the local Hangzhou Water Bus. This vintage public commuter boat glides down the ancient canal, giving you and your family a fantastic, breezy perspective of the weeping willows and historic stone bridges along the banks.

11:00 AM

Gongchen Bridge

We disembark at Gongchen Bridge, a majestic 400-year-old triple-arched stone bridge that historically marked the northern gateway to Hangzhou. Just steps across the bridge, we enter the Fan Museum to learn how folding fans evolved from battlefield signaling tools to elegant status symbols of elite scholars. Then, we will pause for a casual riverside lunch in the historic bridge district.

The Living Craft Museum (Self-funded DIY): Located inside a beautifully converted 1950s textile factory, this is a paradise for kids and adults. You will see master craftsmen carving jade, weaving silk, and painting fans. Families can sit down and DIY their own Chinese fans, oil-paper umbrellas, or painted lanterns. Your guide will translate the instructors' steps so you can create a masterpiece to take home.

02:00 PM

Fang Hui Chun Tang & The Museum Trio

We pop into this legendary Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hall founded in 1649. Smell the rich herbal aromas, observe the traditional medicine-making process, and see how pulse-checking works in ancient diagnostics. Next, we stroll through the interconnecting Umbrella Museum, Knife/Scissor/Sword Museum, and Craft & Arts Museum. Witness the engineering behind the famous West Lake silk umbrellas and the world-renowned Zhang Xiaoquan scissors. The displays are incredibly sensory and engaging for children.

03:30 PM

Xiaohe Straight Street

A short, scenic walk brings us to Xiaohe Straight Street, an ultra-photogenic, water-bound neighborhood where old Hangzhou literally comes alive. White walls, black tiled roofs, and endless flower pots frame the narrow canals.

The Cinematic Highlight (Self-funded Travel Photography): This street is famous for traditional Hanfu dressing studios. If you wish, I will help you select a premium studio to change into elegant traditional garments and get an intricate floral headpiece. We will wander the lanes while I capture stunning, pro-level portraits of your time-travel transformation against the water reflections.

Ending Point

Xiaohe Park

About Tour Guide Scarlett H.

Hi there! I’m Scarlett, a licensed English-speaking guide based in Hangzhou and covering the gorgeous Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang region.

My friends often call me a bit of a story-collector. Having graduated from Cambridge with a degree in sociology, I love going beyond the standard postcard views to help you understand the real, living pulse of China (e.g. local stories, hidden details, and quirky histories most tourists walk right past). Everything I do is entirely customized around your vibe. Whether you’re dreaming of a zen day sipping tea in mist-shrouded valleys, hunting down the best under-the-radar street eats, or chasing futuristic, cyberpunk cityscapes for that perfect shot, we can design it from scratch.

We can easily explore on foot, but if you want to travel in total comfort and style, I also offer car tours with my own very cozy private wheels, perfect for escaping the summer heat or zipping between hidden spots. Oh, and you can leave the camera duty to me! I have a real passion for photography and a sharp eye for lighting and angles, so I’ll make sure you go home with a camera roll full of stunning memories.

Whether you're here for a quick weekend or a deep-dive adventure, just drop me a message and let's craft your perfect trip!
