We would recommend spending at least 5 to 7 days here to explore some of Hungary's major attractions and get a good feel for the country. If you’ve got five days in the Pearl of the Danube, here’s a good 5-day itinerary to try out;

Day 1-2: Budapest - Check out the Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church, and the Hungarian Parliament Building. You can spend the second day on a relaxing cruise along the Danube River, go on a Hungarian food themed tour within the capital, and wind down by indulging in Széchenyi or Gellért thermal baths.

Day 3: Szentendre Day Trip - Get ready for calm landscapes, baroque architecture, art galleries, and museums. You can walk the cobblestone streets, visit the Marzipan Museum, and end the day with a cozy meal at one of the many cafés and restaurants.

Day 4-5: Along Lake Balaton - Head to Hungary’s largest lake for two days of resort living and amazing views. You can swim, sail or simply relax along the beaches, or go for a bike tour by the lake shore. Top things off with a tour of the towns of Tihany or Badacsony, where wine tasting and historical knowledge awaits.

For most travelers, late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to early October) are considered the best months to visit Hungary because of cool to warm temperatures, and the blossoming landscapes of Spring and the harvest festivals of autumn. It’s best to use the Hungarian Forint (HUF) which is Hungary’s national currency. Despite being part of the EU, euros are not commonly used, and you might find poor exchange rates, random fees and vendors not willing to take euros. Instead, exchange money into Hungarian Forints upon arrival at a bank, currency exchange office, or ATM. ATMs are easy to find, and credit cards are accepted in most shops, restaurants, and hotels, especially in tourist areas.
