Meeting Point
Nairobi Area/ Nanyuki/ JKIA International Airport
- Your guide will meet you at the agreed pickup location in Nairobi (hotel, airport, or city center) or at Chuka/Chogoria if arranged in advance. For guests traveling directly to Tharaka, the meeting point is our family homestead. Exact directions, GPS location, and contact details will be shared after your booking is confirmed.
Day 1 – Journey from Nairobi & Welcome to Tharaka
- Depart Nairobi for Tharaka through the scenic eastern slopes of Mount Kenya.
- Arrive at the homestead for a traditional breakfast and warm welcome.
- Introduction to the Tharaka people, homestead life, sustainable farming, livestock, indigenous herbs, medicinal plants, and family traditions.
- Participate in preparing a traditional goat feast using local herbs and spices.
- Guided village walk and community interaction.
- Visit the local market (on market days) and experience everyday village life.
Return to the homestead to relax.
- Enjoy a traditional nyama choma dinner followed by storytelling, songs, and oral traditions around the fire.
Day 2 – Sacred Sites & Oral Traditions
- Enjoy a traditional breakfast at the homestead.
- Visit Kijege and Ntugi sacred hills, Kathita and Tana river, and culturally significant sites while learning about Tharaka history, spirituality, and customs.
- Explore the dryland landscape, identifying indigenous trees, medicinal herbs, edible plants, and local wildlife.
- Return for a traditional lunch.
- Spend the afternoon engaging with elders and listening to oral histories passed down through generations.
- Enjoy dinner and an evening of storytelling around the fire.
Day 3 – Living Culture & Traditional Skills
- Begin the day with a traditional breakfast.
- Visit respected community elders to learn about the migration, clan system, customs, and oral history of the Tharaka people.
- Experience traditional honey harvesting and honey brewing (seasonal).
- Learn sisal harvesting, rope making, basket weaving, and local handcrafts with community artisans.
- Enjoy a home-cooked lunch.
- Participate in preparing traditional Tharaka dishes using locally grown ingredients.
- Free time for photography, filmmaking, or relaxing at the homestead.
- Traditional dinner with music, songs, and cultural exchange.
Day 4 – Meru National Park Adventure
- Depart for Meru National Park via Ura Gate.
- Enjoy a full-day game drive through one of Kenya's most diverse wildlife reserves.
- Search for elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, black and white rhinos, Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes, lesser kudu, Beisa oryx, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 bird species.
- Picnic lunch inside the park.
- Continue exploring the park's rivers, forests, and open savannah.
- Return to the homestead for dinner and relaxation.
Day 5 – Sustainable Farming & Everyday Life
- Join your host family in daily farming activities.
- Learn about crop cultivation, livestock care, composting, water conservation, and climate-smart agriculture.
- Visit nearby farms and interact with local farmers.
- Discover indigenous farming techniques that have sustained the Tharaka community for generations.
- Enjoy another evening sharing stories with your host family.
Day 6 – Oral History & Cultural Heritage
- Meet respected community elders and learn about the history and migration of the Tharaka people.
- Record oral traditions and explore opportunities for documentary photography and filmmaking (with permission).
- Visit local artisans specializing in basket weaving, sisal crafts, woodworking, and traditional architecture.
- Experience authentic village life away from typical tourist routes.
- End the day with a traditional dinner and cultural discussions.
Day 7 – Community Legacy & Farewell Celebration
- Extended village immersion with local families, farmers, and artisans.
- Take part in a tree-planting activity or another community conservation initiative, leaving a positive contribution to the area.
- Enjoy a traditional lunch at the homestead.
- Spend the afternoon revisiting your favorite locations for photography, filming, shopping for handmade crafts, or relaxing with your host family.
- Celebrate your last night with a farewell feast featuring nyama choma, traditional dishes, local music, storytelling, and cultural performances. Share memories with your hosts and receive a heartfelt send-off from the family.
Day 8 – Farewell to Tharaka
- Enjoy a final breakfast with your host family.
- Take photographs, exchange contacts, and receive a warm farewell from the community.
- Begin the journey back to Nairobi, with stops along the way for refreshments and scenic views.
- Arrive in Nairobi and conclude your Tharaka Cultural Immersion experience.

Tour Important Information
* Please book at least 3 days in advance to allow time for community and homestay arrangements.
* For better scenic landscape view and an amazing sunrise watch, I recommend we start the journey early morning(3.30-5.00am) but we can do night drive.
* Fast Wi-Fi and reliable electricity are available at the homestead.
* Wear comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunscreen for the dryland climate.
* Bring a reusable water bottle, insect repellent, and a light jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
* This tour includes walking on uneven terrain, village paths, and natural trails.
* Please inform your host in advance of any food allergies, dietary requirements, or medical conditions.
* Respect local customs, traditions, and sacred sites. Your guide will explain the appropriate etiquette.
* Ask for permission before photographing local people or culturally sensitive locations (your guide will help you)
* Meru National Park entrance fees are not included unless stated in your booking.

I'm Lewis, a Kenyan documentary filmmaker, an experienced tour guide and the host of an authentic family homestay where travellers can experience real rural life beyond the usual tourist routes. I enjoy welcoming people from around the world and sharing the traditions, history, and daily life of the Meru people, one of East Kenya's oldest Bantu communities.
Our homesteads offer a genuine cultural exchange where you'll live with a local family, enjoy home-cooked meals, participate in farming and community activities, and learn through storytelling and shared experiences. We also organise visits to the beautiful Meru National Park, a rarely touristed route near cultural and natural sites.
