Discover Seoul through the story of the “Miracle on the Han River.” With an Expert Historian as your guide, this private tour shows how Korea transformed from a traditional kingdom into a modern global economy.

We explore the Old Soul of Seoul in Gangbuk—home to royal palaces and historic neighborhoods—and the Modern Heart in Gangnam, where the skyline reflects Korea’s rapid development. This tour offers a clear and engaging introduction to Seoul’s past and present.

09:00 AM

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), a kingdom built upon Confucian philosophy and a sophisticated governing system. As we walk through the palace grounds, you will discover how architecture, political ideals, and nature were harmonized to express the order of the state. The palace was not simply a royal residence; it was the symbolic center of governance where kings ruled, scholars advised the court, and the Confucian vision of society was implemented.

You will see the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon), royal council spaces, and the carefully planned layout that reflected Joseon’s hierarchy and worldview. Along the way, I will explain how Korea adopted and adapted the classical Confucian system of governance while shaping its own political culture. This helps explain long-lasting values in Korean society such as education, meritocracy, and the role of scholarship in government.

Damaged during periods of foreign invasions and later restored, Gyeongbokgung also reflects the resilience of Korean history.

By the time we leave the palace, you will not only have seen impressive royal architecture, but also gained insight into the political philosophy and governing principles that shaped Korea for more than five centuries.

10:40 AM

Bukchon Hanok Village

We then walk to Bukchon Hanok Village, a historic neighborhood located between the royal palaces. During the Joseon period, this area developed as a prestigious residential district for scholar-officials who served the royal court. Living close to the palace and major government institutions reflected both status and responsibility within the governing elite of the kingdom.

As we explore the quiet lanes of Bukchon, you will see traditional hanok houses that illustrate how architecture, daily life, and Confucian values were closely connected. The design of these homes reveals ideas about family hierarchy, harmony with nature, and the social order that shaped Joseon society.

At the same time, Bukchon also tells a story of transformation. While the neighborhood preserves the atmosphere of historic Seoul, its landscape has evolved over time, reflecting the changes of a modern city built upon centuries of tradition.

Walking through Bukchon allows us to understand not only how people lived in the past, but also how historical layers continue to exist within contemporary Seoul.

12:00 PM

Gangnam Insight (History & Pop Culture):

Gangnam represents the dramatic transformation of Seoul during the decades known as the “Miracle on the Han River.” Until the 1970s, this area south of the Han River was mostly farmland and small villages. Today it has become one of the most dynamic business and cultural districts in Asia.

• Bongeunsa Temple – A historic Buddhist temple founded more than a thousand years ago. Surrounded today by modern skyscrapers, it offers a striking contrast between Korea’s spiritual traditions and the rapid urban growth of modern Seoul.

• Starfield Library & Gangnam Style Statue – Inside COEX Mall we visit the famous Starfield Library, known for its towering bookshelves and contemporary architecture. Nearby stands the “Gangnam Style” statue, inspired by the global hit song that introduced modern Korean pop culture to the world.

This section of the tour helps visitors understand how tradition, global culture, and economic development coexist in today’s Seoul.

02:00 PM

Lotte world Tower (Seoul sky)

Standing at 555 meters, Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in Korea and one of the tallest in the world. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Seoul and the Han River.

From here we can clearly see how Seoul expanded along the river during the decades known as the “Miracle on the Han River.” What was once the edge of the city has transformed into a skyline filled with modern architecture and global business.

This moment helps visitors visualize the remarkable transformation of Seoul from a war-torn city into a vibrant global metropolis.

04:00 PM

Myeongdong shopping district

Myeongdong is one of the liveliest districts in Seoul and a symbol of the city’s modern consumer culture. What began as a commercial area during Korea’s rapid economic growth has evolved into a vibrant street filled with fashion, cosmetics, cafés, and local food.

As the afternoon turns toward evening, the streets become even more energetic as famous street food stalls begin to appear. This is a great place to experience the everyday rhythm and urban vitality of modern Seoul.

[Expert Historian & Your Knowledgeable Korean Friend]

"To truly understand a country, you need a guide who has lived its history and navigated its modern complexities."

Hi, I’m Andy. I bridge the gap between Korea’s dynamic corporate world and its profound historical roots. While I hold the highest-level Korean History Proficiency Certificate (Level 1), my guests often describe me as a "knowledgeable and humorous Korean friend."

■ Why Choose My Tour?

■ My Philosophy

A great tour is a balance of insight, laughter, and genuine connection. I use carefully prepared laminated insight cards to make complex history clear and engaging, but my greatest joy is helping guests experience Korea in a meaningful and memorable way.

Beyond Seoul, I also specialize in multi-day journeys to Gyeongju, Andong, and Busan.

A fascinating tour from a great guide!

We had a wonderful day and half private tour with Andy! He was responsive and easy to plan our custom day and a half tour in Seoul, listening to our interests and making recommendations. We had a half day in the National Museum for a crash course in Korean History, followed by a full day exploring the Palace, Insadong and finishing at the War Memorial Museum. You can tell that Andy is a truly interested and passionate about Korean history, which made for a very engaging tour. He was a gracious and caring host that went the extra mile to help us enjoy our visit - his brand new minivan is also very comfortable to travel between locations. I would certainly recommend Andy. If you are thinking of any sort of tour around Seoul, give him message to discuss your ideas!
