Born and raised in Seoul, I guide you through the historic districts of 'Gangbuk', where traditional neighborhoods, markets, and royal spaces reveal the city’s identity.

Rather than simply visiting landmarks, this tour follows the structure of old Seoul—from everyday life in Bukchon and local markets to the royal order of Gyeongbokgung—showing how history and daily life connect.

Whether traveling solo or as a couple, this experience offers a deeper way to understand the spirit of old Seoul.

- At the lobby (where the front desk is located)

10:00 AM

Bukchon Hanok Village

We then walk to Bukchon Hanok Village, a historic neighborhood located between the royal palaces. During the Joseon period, it developed as a prestigious residential area for scholar-officials serving the royal court, where proximity to power reflected both status and responsibility.

As we explore its quiet lanes, you will see traditional hanok houses that reveal how architecture, daily life, and Confucian values were closely connected. Their design reflects ideas of family hierarchy, harmony with nature, and the social order of Joseon society.

At the same time, Bukchon tells a story of continuity and change. While preserving the atmosphere of historic Seoul, the neighborhood has evolved over time, reflecting the transformation of the modern city.

Walking through Bukchon offers insight not only into how people lived in the past, but also how these historical layers continue within contemporary Seoul.

11:30 AM

Gwangjang Market

We continue to Gwangjang Market, one of Seoul’s oldest traditional markets and a vibrant center of everyday life.

Originally established during the early 20th century, the market played an important role in the city’s commercial development, connecting small-scale trade, textiles, and food culture.

As we walk through its lively alleys, you will experience the energy of local life—where food, commerce, and social interaction come together in a uniquely Korean setting.

Gwangjang Market offers a different perspective on Seoul, revealing how ordinary people lived, worked, and built the foundations of the modern city.

12:00 PM

Cheonggyecheon Stream

Cheonggyecheon is today a restored stream and a peaceful space in the heart of Seoul.

As we walk along the water, you will learn how this place reflects the city’s dramatic transformation—from an overcrowded industrial area to a symbol of urban renewal and modern city planning.

It offers a clear example of how Seoul has reshaped its environment while reconnecting history, nature, and everyday life.

12:40 PM

Insadong street

Insadong has long been known as a center of traditional culture in Seoul, where galleries, antique shops, tea houses, and craft boutiques line the streets.

Today, it reflects how Korean artistic and intellectual traditions have been preserved and reinterpreted within a modern urban setting.

Walking through Insadong offers insight into how tradition continues to evolve, becoming part of everyday life and cultural experience in contemporary Seoul.

02:00 PM

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), a kingdom built upon Confucian philosophy and a sophisticated governing system. As we walk through the palace grounds, you will discover how architecture, political ideals, and nature were harmonized to express the order of the state. The palace was not simply a royal residence; it was the symbolic center of governance where kings ruled, scholars advised the court, and the Confucian vision of society was implemented.

You will see the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon), royal council spaces, and the carefully planned layout that reflected Joseon’s hierarchy and worldview. Along the way, I will explain how Korea adopted and adapted the classical Confucian system of governance while shaping its own political culture. This helps explain long-lasting values in Korean society such as education, meritocracy, and the role of scholarship in government.

Damaged during periods of foreign invasions and later restored, Gyeongbokgung also reflects the resilience of Korean history.

By the time we leave the palace, you will not only have seen impressive royal architecture, but also gained insight into the political philosophy and governing principles that shaped Korea for more than five centuries.

03:40 PM

The National Folk Museum of Korea

The National Folk Museum of Korea offers insight into how social values were expressed in daily life, complementing what we have seen at the royal palace.

Focusing on the “Life Passage” exhibition, you will explore key stages of Korean life—birth, coming of age, marriage, the 60th birthday, funerals, and ancestral rites—and how these were shaped primarily within the Confucian framework of Joseon society.

While many of these practices were formalized among the educated elite, their influence extended broadly and continues to shape social norms and family traditions in Korea today.

This visit connects the philosophical system of Joseon with both historical practice and its lasting presence in contemporary Korean society.

Excellent introduction to Korea, its past, its present and its challenges

I had the chance of following Andy for 2 days: we went to the museum where he gave me a comprehensive briefing on Korea's past. We then drove to the Royal Palace and to the Bukchon Village. While I was comfortably seated in his car, he spoke about Korea's present and, the next day, when we visited the DMZ, he spoke about the war and the challenges Korea is facing today. He even prepared a brochure with the most relevant facts to look up and to refer to. I had an issue with my cellphone's internet connection and Andy was very helpful in calming me down and in trying to find a solution.

A great tour with Andy!

Andy provided an enjoyable and informative tour. His itinerary flowed well, and provided a look at a variety of interesting neighborhoods in Seoul that all had their own distinct character. His deep knowledge of Korean history added so much to the day. Andy also went above and beyond in helping with a little bit of shopping at the end of the tour. Thank you Andy for a great day!

Thank you very much for your thoughtful review. I’m glad you enjoyed exploring the different neighborhoods and their unique character. It was a pleasure sharing Korea’s history with you, and I’m especially happy that the day felt both informative and well-paced. Wishing you a wonderful rest of your journey!

Fascinating visit to the DMZ with Andy

Four of us were on a cruise ship docked at Incheon and organised the day trip to the DMZ on gowithguide several months in advance. Andy was waiting in the cruise ship terminal when we disembarked and had his luxurious people carrier parked close by. After a short drive, we arrived at the DMZ, visited tunnel number 3, the observation tower and the Gloucester Regiment memorial. Andy was good company, informative and with a good sense of humour. He got us back to the dock in plenty time for our departure and we would certainly recommend him to anyone planning a visit to the Seoul or Incheon area.

Thank you very much for your kind review! It was a real pleasure meeting you and your group during your cruise stop in Incheon and sharing the DMZ with you. I’m very glad everything worked smoothly with the ship schedule and that you were able to experience the Third Tunnel, the observatory and the Gloucester Regiment memorial. Your group was wonderful company, and I truly enjoyed our conversations throughout the day. Thank you again for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. Andy
