The public steamed baths (Hammams) are a very social place, particularly fir women where they can enjoy each other's company in the absence of men. Though women normally take their young children to the hammam with them. A hammam may be for women only or for men only. sometimes men and women can use the same hammam at different hours - men in the evening and women during the day. The hammam consists of two or three rooms tiled walls, floor, and ceiling. Each room has its own temperature, the innermost being the hottest.
Fountains serve for both washing and drinking. But there are some fountains more privileged for their historical and architectural importance like fountain shroob ou shoof (drink and look) and Moussine fountain 16th century.
Most families in medina (old town) take foods that need to be baked- primaliry bread- to the public oven or furran. Furrans are scattered all over medina, much as public baths ( hammams) are. Each street in the medina has its own bakery (furran).
Foundouks are the old hotels used by the caravans coming from Sahara, Timbuktou mountains or north African countries. Travelers would spend one or two nights in the foundouk, they could also have food or possibly store their goods in a case they are marchants. Nowadays, many of these foundouks are used as tourist places (restaurants, cafés or craft centres or even hotels.)
Exploring the souks of Marrakech is like walking down the corridors of time. More revealed, the more you delve, for it is the hidden foundouks and courtyards in the alleys of medina away from the main streets. Each craft centre is a different alley organized into a guild with apprentices working under master craftsmen for several years, just like their ancestors used to do centuries age.
