I’m heading out to explore the historic cente. Want to join me for a stroll and some great stories?"
Our journey will take us from the heights of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in the world, down through the Old Town. We’ll marvel at the golden interiors of the Joanina Library, wander past the imposing Old Cathedral, and lose ourselves in the narrow, flower-draped 'quebra-costas' streets. To top it off, we'll cross the bridge for a stunning sunset view over the Mondego River, where the city lights begin to reflect on the water, perfectly capturing the magic of Coimbra."

Meeting Point
King Denis Stata
- We’ll meet at the Statue of Dom Dinis, right at the top of the hill in the University’s main square Standing tall and watching over the campus, this statue is the ultimate landmark of Coimbra’s academic heart. It’s the perfect starting point for our journey.
Paço das escolas
Just a few steps from the statue, we’ll enter the magnificent Paço das Escolas, the monumental heart of the University. This sun-drenched courtyard is framed by centuries of history, from the elegant Via Latina to the iconic University Tower (the 'Cabra'). It’s a place where the grandeur of Portuguese royalty meets 700 years of academic tradition. Standing there, surrounded by white stone and the vast horizon of the Mondego valley, you truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time."
Sé velha
From the grandeur of the palace, we’ll dive into the heart of the Alta, the historic upper district. Our path leads us to the Sé Velha (Old Cathedral), a stunning Romanesque fortress-cathedral that has stood since the 12th century. Its golden-hued walls feel more like a castle than a church, hidden within a maze of steep, narrow alleys and 'republicas'—the traditional student houses. Walking through these streets, you can almost hear the echoes of centuries-old Fado songs and the whispers of Coimbra’s ancient secrets."
Almedina Baixa e Santa Cruz
"Our descent continues through the iconic Arco de Almedina, the ancient gateway that once protected the medieval city. Leaving the 'Alta' behind, we’ll step into the bustling Baixa (Downtown), where traditional shops and lively cafes line the streets. Our final stop is the magnificent Santa Cruz Monastery, a National Pantheon where Portugal’s first kings rest. It’s the perfect place to soak in the intricate Manueline architecture before we grab a coffee and a famous Pastel de Santa Clara to celebrate our journey through the heart of Coimbra."
