Meeting Point
Praça 8 de maio, in front of the Santa Cruz Church
- Located in downtown Coimbra, this small, historic square features a fountain in the center and historic buildings. The guide will be in the square near the Church of Santa Cruz, a large building, wearing a green shirt and carrying a green bottle.
Church Santa Cruz
This church, which is of great importance in the history of Coimbra and Portugal, hides connections to the Jews. What might these be?
Jewish Fountain
Although there have been several modifications over time, a fountain from the Jewish era still stands in Coimbra.
Inquisition Courtyard/ Exhibition
The Inquisition and its respective court arrested and tortured several Jews and other victims. We will visit some cells of the old court/Inquisition of Coimbra, which have survived to this day, and also, in the same area, the recent exhibition dedicated to the Jews and the Inquisition.
New Jewish Quarter (remains)
In this neighborhood, there are not many traces of the Jewish era left, but it is still possible to explore this area and understand why it was built and what may still exist.
Commerce Square
The Jews experienced some very terrifying moments in this square.
Old Jewish Quarter
Like the new Jewish quarter, this neighborhood has also changed over time. It is believed that there are traces of the Jewish era to be found in this street. There is a strong suspicion as to the location of the synagogue. There is also a legend that links Jews to the current name of this street.
Street Paço de Sub Ripas
A great hero lived on this street during World War II. Let's talk about this gentleman and understand Portugal's role in World War II.
Mikhve (exterior view)
A recent and surprising discovery led the local authority to take a completely different approach to what was initially expected. Why, and how was the mikveh discovered? What are the future plans for the Mikveh? These answers will be provided during the tour.
Ending Point
Praça 8 de Maio. We've finished the tour, where shall we start.

My tours are walking tours. Tours in Coimbra start in Coimbra (although we can arrange to meet you at your hotel in Coimbra if you are staying in the city center, if that is more convenient for you). For tours outside Coimbra, if you need help, I can help you get to your destination. Usually, the meeting point will be at the location specified in the tour, but I can guide you in Conimbriga, Figueira da Foz, if you can kindly pay my transportation fee.
Hello, I'm João. I was born in Coimbra, and I have a degree in Anthropology, and master's degree in Cultural heritage, management and programming. I am a certified guide. I love meeting new people and helping them get to know my country better. If you enjoy history and want to learn more about our culture and traditions, I think my tours are the best choice for you. I work mainly in the city of Coimbra, and around. I am based in Coimbra region, but I am also available for tours in Lisbon, Aveiro, or Porto. I will be happily suggesting you a full customized tour in these 3 cities. Please send me a request, just customize your request.
This is just a suggestion, but If you are very interested in history and would like to take an original tour in Lisbon, we can visit various archaeological sites in Lisbon (such as Roman cisterns, city walls, and Iron Age neighborhoods), sometimes walking through unexpected places, such as shopping malls or under hotels, banks, churches, and even bathrooms (public, clean)... History is where you least expect it.
Thank you!
