“The highlight was Lionel our driver!!”
Lionel was just amazing. He was so professional from start to finish. The people carrier was very clean and very comfortable. His driving was very good and safe. I am a v good driver myself and not always a good passenger. The drive up to Sintra & Pena Palace would certainly test the best of them. I had booked the 14.30 slot at the palace when should have booked the 15.00. Lionel warned us and was very concerned that we would not be allowed in. As luck would have it we got in with 2 seconds to spare!! The palace itself was very interesting and the views were great. We then stopped in Sintra village on the way and did some relaxed shopping. Lionel was again very helpful answering our questions and making recommendations on the way back. It was great fun all round. Our party varied in age from 14 to 69 and everybody enjoyed it thoroughly. Definitely 5 STARS. Anne (Hennessy)

“Crowds in Sintra”
We had the most amazing guide today, unfortunately Sintra was a big disappointment. The crowds were beyond our experience. Something is very wrong with the management of the site. I would never recommend it to anyone. DIEGO was the only thing that made the day good

(5 reviews)We are sorry Sintra didn't meet your expectations, but it is a very popular destination and we always do our best to avoid the big crowds.
“Excellent Day with Francisco”
We had a wonderful 8 hour tour of four palaces in Sintra. Firstly, even though we had a rental car, this is not a tour that we could have done on our own. The maze of streets and few hidden parking spots would have likely meant that we would have has to miss sites. Also, gps doesn’t work on the volcanic mountain. Second, he has an excellent knowledge of the sites, and of Portuguese and world history. He also is an excellent story teller, and a great guy. Francisco picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, which was helpful. Moreover, he grew up in Sintra, and now lives nearby so he knows a lot of people, and picked an excellent, simple local restaurant for lunch. If we did it again, would spend an extra night in Sintra and do a second day of touring with him. Highly recommend a tour with him.

While the majestic Pena Palace and the enigmatic Quinta da Regaleira are must-sees, your guide can also introduce you to the quieter, often overlooked spots such as the serene Monserrate Palace or the tranquil Convent of the Capuchos. These less crowded sites offer a peaceful respite from the busier tourist areas and provide a more intimate look at Sintra’s diverse cultural tapestry.
To truly appreciate the magic of Sintra, we recommend spending at least a full day. This allows you to explore the main attractions at a leisurely pace, such as;
If you have more time, a two-day visit lets you delve deeper into Sintra’s hidden corners and charming streets. A guided tour can help you maximize your time and ensure you experience the best of what Sintra has to offer, no matter what your travel schedule looks like.
Yes, you can certainly visit Sintra on your own. However, the area is rich with history, legends, and intricate details that can be easily missed without expert guidance. A guided tour provides valuable insights and ensures you don’t miss the hidden stories and best spots, making your visit more enriching and enjoyable.
The best way to get around Sintra is by combining walking with local transportation. The town’s narrow, winding streets are best explored on foot, but some attractions are located on steep hills and can be quite a hike. For example, walking to Pena Palace from the city center takes 30 minutes, but Quinta da Regaleira is only a 10-minute walk from the same city center.
The local buses and tuk-tuks are convenient options to help you navigate these areas. For a hassle-free experience, consider booking a guided tour that includes transportation, so you can focus on enjoying the sights.
Absolutely! A tour of Sintra is highly recommended. Sintra is already enchanting, but a knowledgeable guide can bring the history and legends of Sintra to life, making your visit much more engaging.
Plus, with a tour, you’ll have all logistics handled for you, allowing you to relax and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Whether it’s a private tour by yourself, or with loved ones, it’s a fantastic way to see the best of Sintra efficiently and comfortably.
If you can, book a weekday trip to Sintra, as weekends can get quite crowded and filled with both locals and tourists from around the world.
If you only have a weekend t spare, make your way to Sintra’s attractions as early as possible, or later in the day as the crowds thin out. The Pena Palace opens up at 9:30, which is a great time to visit, or head there at 5:00 PM as it closes by 6:30 PM. In terms of weather and crowds, the shoulder seasons in Sintra are autumn (September to October) so the pleasant weather ad lower crowds are appealing. The low season starts from November to March (winter).
While it’s possible to see some of Sintra’s highlights in half a day, you’ll only scratch the surface of what this enchanting town has to offer. If you’re short on time, a half-day tour can be a great option to visit key attractions like Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira. However, for a more fulfilling experience, a full day is recommended.
Comfort is key when visiting Sintra. Wear comfortable walking shoes/sneakers, as you’ll be navigating cobblestone streets and potentially hiking up to the hilltop attractions. Layered clothing is advisable, as the weather can change throughout the day, especially in the higher altitudes. It’s chillier in Sintra. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen in the summer, and a light jacket or sweater in the cooler months.
Yes, Sintra is quite walkable, especially in the town center where many attractions, shops, and restaurants are located. However, some of the key sights are situated on hills or are spread out. While walking is a great way to soak in the atmosphere, using local transport or booking a guided tour that features transport can make your visit more comfortable and less tiring.
To get to Pena Palace from the town center of Sintra, you can take the local bus 434, which departs regularly and takes you directly to the entrance of the palace.
Alternatively, tuk-tuks are a fun and scenic way to reach the palace. If you prefer a more convenient and informative experience, a guided Sintra tour often includes transportation to Pena Palace along with insightful commentary about its history and architecture.
