About Tour Guide Stephen Y.
Hello! I'm Stephen. Originally from London, I've had the privilege of calling Tokyo my home for the past 20-odd years. Japan is a beautiful country, and my first visit here left me deeply touched by the kindness of numerous strangers. Whether this is your first visit or you're returning to explore more, I hope our encounter will be memorable and will add to your experience of this wonderful country.
Tokyo is a jazz lover's paradise and is truly blessed with a large number of good joints, from intimate underground spots to historic venues. As a jazz fan, I love exploring the city's live jazz clubs and unique jazz kissas (cafés). Live jazz clubs are fantastic - there's nothing quite like the excitement of a performance unfolding in real time, with the energy shared between the musicians and the audience. I believe live jazz is at its best when it's close, warm, and communal - which is why I'm particularly fond of the smaller, more intimate clubs favored by talented local and visiting musicians. Jazz kissas offer a very different, yet equally captivating experience - they are relaxed spaces to enjoy carefully selected vinyl played on high-quality systems, and sometimes learn from a passionate owner about all things jazz through conversation. Many kissas are also known for their Nel drip coffee - a slow, hand-poured method using a cotton cloth filter, a Japanese favorite rarely seen elsewhere.
On my tours, we can explore a jazz-rich neighborhood such as Kichijoji or Shimokitazawa, join a local jam session (if you're a musician), or do a 'jazz kissa crawl', visiting two or three kissas in one evening to experience their different expressions. I can offer personalized tours tailored to your musical interests. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or requests!

Jazz night in Shimokitazawa + record shops
Let’s explore Shimokitazawa, Tokyo's bohemian paradise known for its eclectic charm and vibrant arts scene. Just 3 minutes by train from Shibuya, this trendy neighborhood boasts narrow streets lined with vintage shops, cozy cafes, and quirky bars. Shimokitazawa is also a hidden gem for jazz lovers, featuring intimate clubs, jazz kissas (cafes), and an array of record shops. The plan below is an example of what we can do, and I will be happy to tailor it based on your musical preferences.

Jazz night in Kichijoji + Harmonica Yokocho
Let me guide you around Kichijoji, a vibrant neighborhood just 15 minutes out from Shinjuku that is often regarded as Tokyo's premier jazz town. Consistently ranked as one of Tokyo's top three most desirable places to live, Kichijoji offers laid back cafes, inviting eateries, charming bars, and diverse shopping, all set against the stunning backdrop of Inokashira Park. The plan below is only an example of what we can do. I will be happy to tailor the plan based on your musical preferences.

Jazz kissa crawl: quiet listening + conversations
Join me for an evening of deep grooves as we move around Tokyo, exploring a few of the city's storied jazz kissas in a vinyl-inspired take on a pub crawl. Jazz kissas are intimate listening bars built around carefully curated records and high-quality sound systems, and have been an integral part of Tokyo's jazz culture since the post-war era. Each is its own world, shaped by the owner's tastes and philosophy. By visiting a small selection, you'll experience their different expressions.

“Great experience start to finish!”
Interested in Tokyo’s jazz listening bars (kissa) or live music? Then book this tour! Stephen took such interest in our group and our musical tastes and crafted what I can only describe as an AMAZING evening of jazz- in our case both live music and jazz kissa. Excellent communication and planning. Can’t recommend strongly enough.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Rob. We certainly zigzagged our way around town quite a bit, and since it was my first time guiding a group of four, I'm really glad you and your friends enjoyed the evening! It was a lot of fun sharing some of Tokyo’s jazz joints with you all.

“A lovely Jazz experience with a great guide”
I was a bit anxious booking a one-on-one guided tour, but Stephen proved to be the best choice for it. He diligently tailored a perfect evening for me and made sure his choices took into account my preferences. Stephen found the perfect live show, took me to a cool Kissa - and the conversations were great. Hope I didn't get too philosophical! All around, it was an unforgettable evening. Can't thank Steohen enough for making the tour exactly what I wanted.

Thank you Natalie, it was really lovely to meet you, and to spend the evening checking out some jazz joints together, whilst talking about jazz and other things! I’m really glad that you reached out, even with a bit of hesitation about a one-on-one tour. Those moments between the music really do make space for great conversations, and I certainly came away having learnt a few things myself. Please have a fantastic time during the rest of your stay in Japan!

Koichiro Y.
Hello! I’m Koichiro. Please call me “Yamasan”. It derives from my family name and my friends call me so. I worked for a machinery company as a project manager and engineer for mechanical and electrical construction projects both domestic and overseas for over 35 years. I recall my first overseas project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia when I was 26, and the second was in Singapore. I visited many countries for surveys, meetings, commissioning, project handing over, and so on. In 2014 at the age of 60, I decided to retire from the company and live the expected further 30 years of life with a new career and experiences. I, then, studied translation and guide interpretation. I passed the national examination for licensed guides (English) in 2015 and registered with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in February 2016. Until now, I have been guiding many beautiful guests mainly to popular sightseeing spots such as Asakusa, Tsukiji, Omote-Sando, Meiji Jingu Shrine, and Tokyo Skytree, and also cultural experiences of Origami making, Furoshiki wrapping, and Sushi cooking. I am happy that I can freely arrange a customized tour together with you, or can propose my tours to you. I want to show you some parts of daily Tokyo life and introduce you to Bunkyo City which is located in the heart of Tokyo, just north of Chiyoda City where the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station are. The city is Tokyo’s typical residential and academic area where I was born, grew up, and live a happy life now. Now, we can tour around the world but have not yet overcome COVID-19 completely. Recently, the number of passengers wearing masks on public transportation in Tokyo reduced to some 25% but we should mind about it still. Please carry your mask to wear it where or when necessary (December 2024, Yamasan).

Grant A.
Important note: I am currently not able to take new customers after the end of March, 2026. My name is Grant, and I’ve spent over a decade living and exploring Japan. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, I first came to Japan as a high school exchange student in Inuyama, a historic castle town in Aichi. My love for Japan began early—sparked by childhood games like Pokémon that were released in Japanese before English. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong passion for Japanese language, culture, and history. I hold an N2 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, a degree in Asian Studies from a Tokyo university, and I graduated from the Japan Visual Media Translation Academy. I’ve visited all 47 prefectures and explored a wide range of historical sites, shrines, and castles throughout the country. My background in Japanese history helps me provide context that brings depth and meaning to the places we visit—whether it's understanding a centuries-old temple in Kyoto, the story behind a castle ruin, or uncovering the historical layers of a Tokyo neighborhood. If you’re planning to explore Tokyo, here are some tour options to consider: One day in Tokyo? The Ginza Line Tour offers a great introduction to the city’s highlights. Two days? Pair the East Tokyo Tour and West Tokyo Tour to get a well-rounded experience. Interested in anime? The Anime Tour is flexible and can be tailored to match your specific interests. For those looking to go beyond the city, I also offer day trips to Nikko, Kamakura, and other nearby destinations. Full-Day Tour: 40,000 yen (8 hours) Full-Day Tour Outside of Tokyo: 40,000 yen + transportation Feel free to get in touch to plan a tour that fits your interests and travel plans.
