It is Feb. 1945, the Siege of Budapest is reaching its dramatic finale. One desperate act remains: The Breakout. This walk will take you to Feb. 11th 1945, with events and locations brought to life. Up until late 1944, Budapest had remained largely unscathed. This was to change with Soviet and Axis forces fighting to the last man. “An Extraordinary History Lesson”
Our party of four spent nearly four hours with Pieter B., our engaging and very, very knowledgeable guide. Pieter is passionate about the the story of Breakout 1945, and that is the recipe for an incredible tour. He brought the story to life as we followed the "bootsteps" of the German soldiers during their attempt to breakout during the Soviet siege of Budapest. Knowing our interest in contemporary Hungarian history, Pieter also welcomed our questions about Hungary's recent change in government. The tour also helped us get acquainted with Budapest's tram and bus system, as Pieter met us at our hotel and then took us up to Buda Hill by bus and back to our hotel by tram.
